House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said Thursday he is “bullish” on next year’s midterms in spite of a redistricting loss in Indiana.
“I guess that’s a disappointing outcome in Indiana, but there’s about 14 states at some stage of the process now, either litigation or redistricting. So, we shall see. We shall see. But I’m very, very bullish about the midterms. I know that we are going to win because we have a great record to run on,” Johnson told The Hill on Thursday.
On Thursday, the Indiana state Senate did not pass a new House map favoring Republicans, a loss for President Trump after he had pressed state lawmakers to approve the new lines. The upper chamber rejected the map in a 19-31 vote, resulting in applause from some in the Senate.
“We have better candidates, better message and we have a lot to show the people, so we’ll continue our momentum,” Johnson said.
Trump on Wednesday had refreshed a warning to primary Republican lawmakers who are against the Republican push to switch up Indiana’s congressional map.
“Anybody that votes against Redistricting, and the SUCCESS of the Republican Party in D.C., will be, I am sure, met with a MAGA Primary in the Spring,” Trump said in a Truth Social post.
“If Republicans will not do what is necessary to save our Country, they will eventually lose everything to the Democrats,” he added.
