Voto Latino and dozens of other advocacy organizations pressed for Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin to be impeached in a letter to Congress last week.
“We write to demand the immediate introduction of articles of impeachment and a full congressional investigation into Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin’s handling of deaths in detention, shootings by [Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)] and [Customs and Border Protection (CBP)] agents and other violence perpetuated by DHS,” the groups wrote in the letter, dated last Thursday.
This coalition of advocacy groups responsible, who describe themselves as “interfaith, human rights, business, immigration, veteran and civil rights leaders,” addressed their letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), and Reps. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), Andrew Garbarino (R-N.Y.) and Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.).
In the letter, the groups state that Mullin “has failed to provide meaningful oversight over the rogue and unchecked pattern of excessive force weaponized against entire communities across the country,” people dying while in ICE custody “and the deplorable, sub-human conditions” faced by those in detention centers.
During President Trump’s second term, his administration has undertaken a strict immigration agenda, which has received mass backlash. That anger boiled over earlier this year when two U.S. citizens were killed in Minneapolis by federal immigration authorities.
Last week, nearly every member of the House Democratic Caucus signed a letter requesting an independent investigation on two deadly shootings by ICE officers which happened in a span of a week.
“We are calling for immediate independent investigations into both of these deaths, without interference,” the Democrats said in their letter, referencing the killings of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston and Joan Guerrero in Maine, both of whom were killed in the last month.
The Hill has reached out to the offices of the representatives that the letter was addressed to and DHS for comment.
