The attack also left a doctor, nurse, custodian and two other officers wounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/2-12.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9858\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/2-12.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/2-12-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Pennsylvania Hospital-Shooting\u00a9\u00a0Matt Rourke<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officers opened fire as Archangel-Ortiz held at gunpoint a female staff member whose hands had been zip-tied, police said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man apparently intentionally targeted the hospital after he was in contact with the intensive care unit earlier in the week for medical care involving someone else, according to the York County district attorney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/3-10.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9859\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/3-10.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/3-10-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Pennsylvania Hospital-Shooting\u00a9\u00a0Matt Rourke<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such violence at hospitals is on the rise, often in emergency departments but also maternity wards and intensive care units, hospital security consultant Dick Sem said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMany people are more confrontational, quicker to become angry, quicker to become threatening,\u201d Sem said. \u201cI interview thousands of nurses and hear all the time about how they\u2019re being abused every day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Archangel-Ortiz\u2019s motives remained unclear but nurses report increasing harassment from the public, especially following the coronavirus pandemic, said Sem, former director of security and crisis management for Waste Management and vice president at Pinkerton\/Securitas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In hospital attacks, unlike random mass shootings elsewhere, the shooter is often targeting somebody, sometimes resentful about the care given a relative who died, Sem noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt tends to be someone who\u2019s mad at somebody,\u201d Sem said. \u201cIt might be a domestic violence situation or employees, ex-employees. People are losing loved ones. There can be gang violence, domestic violence. Inebriated individuals,\u201d Foltz said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/5-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9861\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/5-4.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/5-4-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Pennsylvania Hospital-Shooting\u00a9\u00a0Matt Rourke<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Besides the fear of being hurt themselves, nurses fear leaving their patients unguarded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you step away from a bedside to run, to hide, to keep safe, you\u2019re leaving your patient vulnerable,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Healthcare and social assistance employees suffered almost three-quarters of nonfatal attacks on workers in the private sector in 2021 and 2022 for a rate more than five times the national average, according to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/iif\/factsheets\/workplace-violence-2021-2022.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other recent attacks on U.S. healthcare workers include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014 Last year, a man&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/idaho-hospital-shooting-prison-escape-white-supremacist-6341ebf493a20647f7b218e5ed597ad3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shot two corrections officers<\/a>&nbsp;in the ambulance bay of an Idaho hospital while freeing a white supremacist gang member before he could be returned to prison. They were caught less than two days later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014 In 2023, a gunman&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hospital-shooting-oregon-maternity-ward-65ac56127714a6d96e677c8506558304\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">killed a security guard<\/a>&nbsp;and wounded a hospital worker in a Portland, Oregon, hospital&#8217;s maternity unit before being killed by police in a confrontation elsewhere. Also in 2023, a man&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/midtown-atlanta-shooting-22526ccef395209c42323ce00d29c1ae\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">opened fire<\/a>&nbsp;in a medical center waiting room in Atlanta, killing one woman and wounding four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014 In 2022, a gunman&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tulsa-oklahoma-texas-school-shootings-61bba0dcf04e2f8dbc34ec4ee7fd02b0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">killed his surgeon and three other people<\/a>&nbsp;at a Tulsa, Oklahoma, medical office because he blamed the doctor for his continuing pain after an operation. Later that year, a man&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/dallas-texas-robbery-shootings-60dbdbe2fa0464eb12ae1d099799554d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">killed two workers at a Dallas hospital<\/a>&nbsp;while there to watch his child\u2019s birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shooting is part of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hospitals-workplace-violence-shootings-aa6918569ff8f76ff8a15b9813e31686\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wave of gun violence<\/a>&nbsp;in recent years that has swept through U.S. hospitals and medical centers, which have struggled to adapt to the growing threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With rising violence, more hospitals are using metal detectors and screening visitors for threats at hospital entrances including emergency departments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many hospital workers say after an attack that they never expected to be targeted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sem said training can be critical in helping medical staff identify those who might become violent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMore than half of these incidents I\u2019m aware of showed some early warning signs from early indicators that this person is problematic. They\u2019re threatening, they\u2019re angry. And so that needs to be reported.
