Rep. Rich McCormick (R-Ga.) said he will likely back Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) in the leadership vote this week, but he\u2019s still not a firm yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McCormick joined NewsNation\u2019s \u201cThe Hill\u201d on Monday, where he was asked if he\u2019d vote for Johnson on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMost likely,\u201d he replied. \u201cWe have decisions to be making and we have to discuss with each other about 10 people who are leaning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd what that means is we want reassurances,\u201d McCormick continued. \u201cI\u2019m not really sure we\u2019re taking the debt seriously. I\u2019m not really sure we\u2019re doing the right things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The House will vote on Friday for its next Speaker. Johnson\u2019s leadership position hangs in the balance as some hard-line conservatives are upset with his negotiations on the continuing resolution and the aid sent to Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President-elect Trump has given an endorsement to Johnson, potentially swaying some who were wavering about voting for the sitting speaker. However, some Republicans are unconvinced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) said he wouldn\u2019t be voting for Johnson and disagreed with Trump\u2019s endorsement. Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) said he would need more conversation with Johnson before deciding later this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like Burchett, McCormick said he wants to speak more with Johnson before he votes for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want a specific plan. When we talk about what we are going to make our cuts, how are we going to save this nation from bankruptcy?\u201d McCormick later added, \u201cI just don\u2019t think we have a plan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Georgia lawmaker expressed frustration with Congress, saying he doesn\u2019t think elected officials are \u201ctaking this seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI need to see exact plans, what we\u2019re going to do, how we\u2019re going to tackle this, so that I know that we\u2019re going to actually have something that\u2019s not going to be passed because 100 percent of Democrats vote for it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McCormick also rebuked the criticism of Trump over the budget issue. It\u2019s up to Congress to be responsible for the budget, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe can have his own ideas, but ultimately, it\u2019s up to us to be responsible and pass a budget that\u2019s somewhat responsible because we haven\u2019t done that in about 30 years,\u201d McCormick said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
