Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) said Sunday the presidential pardon process \u201ccries out for reform\u201d and proposed a board to standardize the process and make recommendations to the president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an interview on CBS News\u2019s \u201cFace the Nation,\u201d Klobuchar said she was not comfortable with some of the people that President Biden included in his 1,500 commutations in one day \u2014 a record number for any president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Klobuchar told moderator Margaret Brennan when asked whether she was comfortable with several examples of the convicted criminals on the list whose sentences were commuted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI also didn\u2019t agree with the pardon of the president\u2019s son,\u201d Klobuchar added. \u201cI also have not agreed with a number of pardons that President Trump gave.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Klobuchar acknowledged that the presidential pardon power is in the Constitution and clarified that she was not advocating to change that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut we should have some kind of an outside board that governors have,\u201d she said. \u201cGovernors have the ability to give mercy to people after years have gone by. But a lot of them have boards that make recommendations and other things, instead of people just doing it in the middle of the night and people in the White House.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shutdown deadline looms<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Klobuchar agreed with Brennan that it was surprising that the White House commuted sentences not by specific cases, but based on a broad group.\u201cI have no doubt there were some righteous pardons in this group,\u201d Klobuchar said when asked whether it was a prudent decision by the White House. \u201cI believe that there were.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut there were a number that I think make no sense at all,\u201d she continued. \u201cSo, instead of doing a whole category, why don\u2019t, in a coming year before the end of a president\u2019s term \u2014 if that\u2019s when they\u2019re mostly going to do these \u2014 that a board looks at these and looks at them individually, when people petition for them, based on the facts, instead of just in a large group?\u201d Klobuchar said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLarge groups have been done before, I believe, but I just I think that this whole process cries out for reform,\u201d she said, \u201cbecause, otherwise, you undermine the justice system.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sen.
