Luigi Mangione, 26, has been arrested in connection to the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City. He was taken into custody in Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mangione was arrested at around 9 a.m. at a McDonald\u2019s in Altoona, about 280 miles from New York City, after police received a tip, according to officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference that police \u201crecovered clothing, including a mask consistent with those worn by our wanted individual.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlso recovered was a fraudulent New Jersey ID matching the ID our suspect used to check into his New York City hostel before the shooting incident.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reports also are emerging about a manifesto the suspect appeared to have with him when he was arrested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tyler Frye, one of the police officers who encountered Mangione at the McDonalds, described the moment of the arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Monday\u2019s press conference, Frye said he immediately recognized Mangione after he agreed to lower his mask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a press conference, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) praised the McDonald\u2019s employee who identified Mangione and called 911, touting it as proof of a strong relationship between law enforcement and the local community in Altoona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe real hero in this story is the person who called 911 at McDonald\u2019s this morning,\u201d Shapiro said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mangione ‘started to shake’ when asked if he had been to NY, complaint says

Police officers in the complaint wrote that they \u201cimmediately recognized\u201d Mangione upon locating him in the Altoona, Pa., McDonald\u2019s and asking him to lower his mask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJust in the last 30 minutes, the FBI and the NYPD have arrived at the Altoona Police Department\u2019s headquarters,\u201d Rep. John Joyce (R-Pa) told CNN\u2019s Jake Tapper shortly after 4 p.m. EST.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joyce represents Pennsylvania\u2019s 13th Congressional district, which encompasses Altoona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mangione was arrested on Monday in an Altoona McDonalds\u2019 after an employee recognized him and then called local police, New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch in a press conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Goodreads account under the name Luigi Mangione which features a profile photo of the shooting suspect that looks similar to those shared on other social media platforms, gave a book written by Ted Kaczynski a four-star review early this year, according to The New York Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kaczynski, otherwise known as the Unabomber, was a Chicago-born mathematician and domestic terrorist whose mail bombing campaign killed three people and injured more than two dozen others during the late 1970s and early 90s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s easy to quickly and thoughtless write this off as the manifesto of a lunatic, in order to avoid facing some of the uncomfortable problems it identifies,\u201d reads the review. \u201cBut it\u2019s simply impossible to ignore how prescient many of his predictions about modern society turned out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mangione appeared to track his reading habits on the website, listing book including science fiction (\u201cEnder\u2019s Game\u201d), airport bookstore standbys (\u201cFreakonomics,\u201d \u201cOutliers\u201d) and young adult classics like the \u201cHarry Potter\u201d and \u201cHunger Games\u201d series, per The Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suspect related to Maryland GOP lawmaker: Reports
Reports circulating on Monday suggested Mangione, the suspect, was related to Republican Maryland state lawmaker Nino Mangione, who represents parts of Baltimore County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WBAL reported the lawmaker\u2019s office confirmed the suspect is his cousin. The Baltimore Sun confirmed the two are connected on social media platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nino Mangione has served in the Maryland House of Delegates since 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baltimore\u2019s Gilman School sends an email about Luigi Mangione\u2019s arrest
In an email to parents and alumni, Gilman headmaster Henry P.A. Smyth said it \u201crecently\u201d learned that Mangione, a 2016 graduate, was arrested in the CEO\u2019s killing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Photo of suspect’s face was the key to his capture

The police released two additional photos of the suspect that appeared to be from a camera mounted inside a taxi on Saturday which was a key factor in his capture, according to authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first photo shows him outside the taxi and another pictured him looking through the partition between the passenger seat in the back and the front of the cab. His face is partially obscured by a blue mask in both those photographs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at the press conference that his arrest was a \u201ccombination of old-school detective work and new age technology\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police arrest person of interest Luigi Mangione in UnitedHealthcare CEO shooting

He was reportedly found with a gun, a silencer, false identification cards and identification with his name on it, the officials said. He also had a handwritten manifesto that criticized health care companies for putting profits above care, according to multiple outlets, including The New York Times and New York Post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mangione has not been charged in connection with the shooting as of 2 p.m. Monday, nor was he officially named as a suspect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hill has reached out to Altoona police for confirmation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thompson was killed early in the morning Dec. 4 outside a hotel in Midtown Manhattan after being shot in the back and right calf on the way to address a meeting of investors. He was declared dead at a hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New York Police Department (NYPD) found a backpack Friday in New York\u2019s Central Park that they say the killer discarded as he fled the area. Officials have said they believe he left the city on a bus on the day of the shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
