BETHLEHEM, Pa. \u2014 Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Monday said the \u201clittle secret\u201d that former President Trump teased at his Madison Square Garden rally is a get-out-the-vote effort, not a \u201cdiabolical\u201d plan to toss out Electoral College results if Trump loses the presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s nothing scandalous, but we\u2019re having a ball with this. The media, their heads are exploding. \u2018What is the secret?\u2019\u201d Johnson told a crowd of about 90 people on Monday at a rally to support GOP congressional candidate Ryan Mackenzie, after a person in the crowd asked about the comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s thing we have about \u2014 it\u2019s a get-out-the-vote. It\u2019s one of our tactics on get-out-the-vote,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut they are convinced,\u201d he added, dramatically rubbing his hands together as if he was coming up with an evil plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump at his Madison Square Garden rally on Sunday teased a \u201clittle secret\u201d he had with Johnson that could have a \u201cbig impact\u201d on keeping control of the House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe can take the Senate pretty easily, and I think with our little secret, we\u2019re going to take the House, right?\u201d Trump said on Sunday. \u201cOur little secret is having a big impact. He and I have a secret. We\u2019ll tell you what it is when the race is over.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The comment spurred theories that Trump and Johnson were planning to try to overturn the results of the 2024 election if Trump again loses the presidential race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI suspect Trump\u2019s little secret plan with Mike Johnson is that when he loses, he tries to go to the House to throw out the Electoral College and have the House under Mike Johnson overturn this election,\u201d Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) said on CNN Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Others theorized that Johnson could have Congress conduct a \u201ccontingent election,\u201d in which each state casts a single vote for president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview with The Hill after the Monday event in Pennsylvania, Johnson said those theories were \u201cabsolute, utter nonsense.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m a lifelong constitutional law attorney. We\u2019re going to respect the law. We\u2019re going to follow the constitution to a T,\u201d Johnson told The Hill. \u201cI\u2019ve proven that over and over and over. So all this conjecture is actually hilarious to us, that people are apoplectic about this. It\u2019s a \u2014 it\u2019s one of our get out the vote strategies. That\u2019s what we\u2019re talking about. And it\u2019s almost a tongue-in-cheek thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked about Johnson\u2019s revelation about the \u201csecret,\u201d Trump campaign national press secretary Karoline Leavitt told The Hill: \u201cPresident Trump has done countless telerallies reaching millions of Americans across the country in key regions that also helps bolster Republicans in congressional races.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Speaker has drawn scrutiny over how he previously handled election certification issues amid Trump\u2019s stolen election claims. He led amicus brief in support of a lawsuit challenging President Biden\u2019s 2020 victory in four states, and voted against certifying the election results in Arizona and Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johnson said on NBC\u2019s Meet the Press earlier this month that he will certify \u201ca free and fair and legal election.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Pennsylvania, Johnson told the crowd that he talked to Trump earlier in the day about reaction to the \u201csecret\u201d comment, and asked if he should beat down the theories. But Trump said \u201cno, no, no,\u201d with Johnson adding they are having \u201csport\u201d with the press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement to the New York Times earlier in the day, Johnson had declined to directly refute worries about overturning the election or to divulge the \u201csecret,\u201d and turned the scrutiny back on Democrats \u2014 a pivot he again made when speaking to The Hill, accusing Democrats of \u201ckeeping secrets as a habit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c[Vice President] Kamala Harris knew about Joe Biden\u2019s diminished mental state and condition way before the American people did. She kept that secret,\u201d Johnson told The Hill. \u201cThe FBI knew that the Hunter Biden laptop was real, and they kept that secret, when all the intel officials were telling us otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harris told NBC News this month that \u201cof course\u201d she was honest with the American public about what she saw from Biden as he was taking heat for his poor debate performance against Trump. Johnson also referred to a letter from former intelligence officials in 2020 who said they suspected stories about the contents of Hunter Biden\u2019s purported laptop were misinformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe really does call it our secret,\u201d Johnson also told the crowd in Pennsylvania about the get-out-the-vote effort. \u201cIt\u2019s not diabolical. It\u2019s actually very good. It\u2019s going to help us with the turnout. All this is blowing their minds. They just can\u2019t \u2014 They cannot fathom that Trump and Vance have the support that they do around the country like they do from \u2014 from new demographics of people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johnson went on to say that the Republicans will see record support from Hispanic and Latino voters, from black voters, and from Jewish voters.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
