{"id":7119,"date":"2024-08-14T08:36:37","date_gmt":"2024-08-14T00:36:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/?p=7119"},"modified":"2024-08-14T08:37:09","modified_gmt":"2024-08-14T00:37:09","slug":"bolton-says-musk-interview-another-case-of-trump-making-things-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/?p=7119","title":{"rendered":"Bolton says Musk interview \u2018another case of Trump making things up\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"659\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/155.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7120\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/155.png 659w, https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/155-300x143.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 659px) 100vw, 659px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Former White House national security adviser John Bolton disputed former President Trump\u2019s account of a conversation he allegedly had with Russian President Vladimir Putin prior to Russia invading Ukraine more than two years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In that conversation \u2014 according to Trump\u2019s retelling of events \u2014 the former president warned the Russian leader of the consequences of launching an invasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI said to Putin, \u2018Don\u2019t do it, Vladimir.\u2019 And I told him things that what I would do. And he said, \u2018No way.\u2019 And I said, \u2018Way.\u2019 It\u2019s the last time we had the conversation. He would have never done. I get along very well with him,\u201d Trump said Monday in an interview with tech mogul Elon Musk on X Spaces, recalling the alleged conversation. \u201cI hope to get along well with him again. It\u2019s a good thing, not a bad thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bolton, who served in the Trump administration from April 2018 to September 2019, responded to Trump\u2019s story in an interview with CNN\u2019s Kaitlan Collins, saying, \u201cI think Trump\u2019s making that up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe certainly didn\u2019t have that conversation with Putin when I was in the White House. I don\u2019t believe he had it before that. I can\u2019t really speak to what came after,\u201d he said. \u201cBut this is another case of Trump making things up that it\u2019s hard to prove or disprove.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe can say he had some private conversation at a dinner, at a [Group of 20] meeting, or something like that. I don\u2019t think it happened,\u201d Bolton continued. \u201cAnd I don\u2019t think that there was really an occasion for Trump to have that conversation. But it fits the persona that Trump thinks he has.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bolton said Trump\u2019s account of the alleged conversation did not reflect the dynamic that he witnessed between the two world leaders on multiple occasions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI personally \u2014 having watched Trump and Putin together, on several occasions, having listened into their phone conversations, having, myself, met Putin on a number of occasions, going back to October of 2001 \u2014 I think that Putin essentially thinks that Trump is an easy mark,\u201d Bolton said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bolton said he doesn\u2019t think Putin respects the former president, \u201cbut he understands that using flattery with Trump can get him a long way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If Trump did get Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a room together to solve the war \u2014 as the GOP nominee for president said he intends to do \u2014 Bolton predicted, \u201cPutin would take Trump to the cleaners, to Ukraine\u2019s detriment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collins read again from the Trump quote, emphasizing the \u201cno way\u201d and \u201cway\u201d language Trump attributed to himself and Putin. She asked Bolton if world leaders truly talk to each other that way, saying, \u201cI mean, it sounds like two high school girls.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo, it\u2019s not even how Donald Trump talks,\u201d Bolton responded. \u201cIt\u2019s how he wished he talked, and how he wished he could show that he\u2019s the big alpha guy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is imagination on Trump\u2019s part. And it shows he really doesn\u2019t understand what\u2019s at stake here. He knows very little history. He certainly knows next to nothing about the history of Ukraine and Russia, which is deeply complicated, even for experts,\u201d Bolton said. \u201cSo, to me, the way he recounts these conversations is one more demonstration that he\u2019s just not fit to be president.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump fired the former national security adviser from his Cabinet in a social media post in 2019, citing policy disagreements.
