Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) shut down the speculation around former Speaker Nancy Pelosi\u2019s (D-Calif.) comments about if President Biden should step aside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coons, a close Biden ally, joined CNN\u2019s Kaitlan Collins on Wednesday evening to discuss the president\u2019s political future as concerns remain nearly two weeks after his poor debate performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier Wednesday, Pelosi said it\u2019s up to Biden to \u201cdecide if he is going to run\u201d and that Democrats are \u201call encouraging him to make that decision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her comments have been questioned since Biden sent a letter on Monday to congressional Democrats bluntly rejecting the calls for him to step aside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coons said he didn\u2019t think his colleagues were signaling that they want Biden to make a different decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think Nancy Pelosi is fully capable of speaking clearly if she thinks that he should make a different decision,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coons said that the former speaker is \u201cone of the most capable, most agile politicians\u201d he\u2019s ever met, and dismissed the idea that there was some subliminal message to her statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf she wants to give a message directly to our president, I think she knows how to do it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coons continued, noting that he thinks Pelosi was addressing the concerns of voters across the country who think that Biden won\u2019t be able to beat former President Trump in the election this fall, as well as serve another four years in office if he\u2019s reelected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president has insisted that he is staying in the race and intends to win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s lots of casual and out in the public conversation about what\u2019s next. He has made a decision. He has communicated that to all of us,\u201d Coons said, later adding, \u201cI\u2019m clear about what\u2019s next \u2026 he\u2019s gonna be our nominee at the convention. He is going to be our candidate for president \u2026 he is going to be our next president of the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
