A House Oversight Committee hearing devolved into chaos Thursday night as Reps.\u00a0Marjorie Taylor Greene\u2002(R-Ga.) and\u00a0Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez\u2002(D-N.Y.) clashed after the firebrand Republican accused Rep.\u00a0Jasmine Crockett\u2002(D-Texas) of wearing \u201cfake eyelashes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The comment \u2014\u00a0which was made during a markup to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress \u2014\u00a0prompted nearly an hour of disorder in the committee, with lawmakers screaming over one another and hurling insults left and right, leaving Chairman\u00a0James Comer\u2002(R-Ky.) struggling to maintain order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The madness culminated Thursday night with a vote on whether or not to allow Greene to continue speaking during the hearing, which the panel ultimately granted in a 22-20 vote. Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) \u2014 who has butted heads with Greene in the past \u2014 crossed party lines to vote against allowing the Georgia lawmaker to proceed during the hearing. Boebert was sitting two seats away from Greene during the vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI hope you brought your popcorn,\u201d Greene exclaimed at one point during the hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Republicans moved to hold Garland in contempt after the attorney general refused to hand over the audio recording of President Biden\u2019s interview with special counsel Robert Hur, despite already having the transcript of the conversation. Biden claimed executive privilege over the audio recordings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vote passed 24-20 along party lines just after 11 p.m. eastern time Thursday night, hours after the House Judiciary Committee did the same. The full House will now vote on holding the attorney general in contempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mayhem broke out during Thursday night\u2019s Oversight hearing when Greene asked if any Democrats on the panel were employing the daughter of Judge Juan Merchan, who is overseeing former President Trump\u2019s hush money trial in Manhattan. Trump and Republicans have targeted the judge\u2019s daughter over her employment at a progressive digital agency. The Oversight Committee delayed Thursday\u2019s contempt markup from an 11 a.m. start time to 8 p.m. so a number of Republicans who sit on the panel were able to attend Trump\u2019s trial in Manhattan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPlease tell me what that has to do with Merrick Garland,\u201d Crockett, a first-term lawmaker, asked, later adding, \u201cdo you know what we\u2019re here for?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think you know what you\u2019re here for,\u201d Greene responded. \u201cI think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you\u2019re reading.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The comment prompted outrage from Democrats, with Rep. Jamie Raskin (Md.), the top Democrat on the committee, saying \u201cthat\u2019s beneath even you, Ms. Greene,\u201d and Ocasio-Cortez yelling \u201cthat\u2019s disgusting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ocasio-Cortez moved to take down Greene\u2019s words, calling them \u201cabsolutely unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow dare you attack the physical appearance of another person,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAre your feelings hurt?\u201d Greene responded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh girl, oh baby girl, don\u2019t even play,\u201d Ocasio-Cortez shot back, leading Greene to say \u201coh really, baby girl?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The back-and-forth prompted a short pause in the proceedings as Comer determined how to proceed. When they resumed, Greene said she would agree to strike her words, but Ocasio-Cortez demanded that she apologize to Crockett, an exchange that led to Greene lobbing an insult at the New York Democrat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI believe she needs to apologize,\u201d Ocasio-Cortez said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m not apologizing,\u201d Greene responded, to which Ocasio-Cortez replied \u201cwell then you\u2019re not striking your words.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy don\u2019t you debate me?\u201d Greene asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s pretty self-evident,\u201d Ocasio-Cortez shot back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYeah, you don\u2019t have enough intelligence,\u201d Greene responded, prompting uproar among Democrats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ocasio-Cortez quickly moved to strike Greene\u2019s \u201cintelligence\u201d comment, which the Georgia Republican agreed to. But she again said she would not apologize, sparking more chaos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou will never get an apology out of me,\u201d Greene reiterated shortly after. \u201cI don\u2019t owe you one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More disorder ensued minutes later when Crockett asked if a hypothetical comment \u2014 which appeared to be a veiled jab at Greene \u2014 would break Congressional protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m just curious, just to better understand your ruling,\u201d Crockett said, referring to a ruling Comer had made about Greene\u2019s comments. \u201cIf someone on this committee then starts talking about somebody\u2019s bleach blonde bad built butch body, that would not be engaging in personalities, correct?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that point, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) jumped into the chaos, asking to strike Crockett\u2019s words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m trying to get clarification,\u201d Crockett said, prompting Luna to repeatedly yell \u201ccalm down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDon\u2019t tell me to calm down,\u201d Crockett responded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCalm down,\u201d Luna shot back. \u201cYou\u2019re out of control.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf I come and talk shit about her ya\u2019ll gonna have a problem,\u201d Crockett said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know what you\u2019re acting like that. It\u2019s not cute,\u201d Luna responded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Raskin, at one point, made a crack about Democrats reviving their motion to adjourn the proceedings, saying, \u201cI think these 17 hour days might not work for us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSomething about working, huh,\u201d Luna responded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.), at that point, joined the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYeah, maybe showing up for a vote,\u201d he responded, an apparent reference to Luna missing votes in the Capitol Thursday afternoon after she appeared alongside Trump at his hush money trial in Manhattan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luna shot back, calling Goldman a \u201ctrust fund kid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
