{"id":5292,"date":"2024-03-19T21:54:42","date_gmt":"2024-03-19T13:54:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/?p=5292"},"modified":"2024-03-19T21:54:49","modified_gmt":"2024-03-19T13:54:49","slug":"blinken-russian-presidential-election-can-only-be-described-as-undemocratic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/?p=5292","title":{"rendered":"Blinken: Russian presidential election \u2018can only be described as undemocratic\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"765\" height=\"441\" src=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/\u5e03.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/\u5e03.png 765w, https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/\u5e03-300x173.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Secretary of State Antony Blinken denounced Russia\u2019s presidential elections on Wednesday after President Vladimir Putin was reelected in a landslide while facing no serious opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blinken described the election as \u201cundemocratic,\u201d citing the Putin government\u2019s decision to bar two candidates from the ballot who opposed the country\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRussia\u2019s recent presidential election occurred in an environment of intense repression of independent voices and the imprisonment, death, or exile of virtually all genuine political opposition,\u201d Blinken said in a statement. \u201cThe Kremlin has systematically marginalized groups advocating for democratic processes and rule of law, including election monitors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese steps illustrate the extent to which the Kremlin has denied its citizens a transparent, meaningful democratic process,\u201d he continued. \u201cAgainst this backdrop, this election can only be described as undemocratic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The secretary\u2019s comments come just a month after the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who was jailed for his resistance to Putin. The U.S. government and other western leaders have blamed Putin for his death, citing previous assassination attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navalny suffered \u201cyears of harassment and cruel treatment at the hands of Russian authorities for his continued efforts to foster genuine democracy in Russia,\u201d Blinken said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Putin easily won the election Tuesday with about 87 percent of the vote, despite widespread dissent within the country against his nearly 25-year rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blinken also criticized the Russian government for censoring media, and showed support for the anti-Putin protesters in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVladimir Putin is depriving Russian citizens of access to information, including to inform political participation,\u201d Blinken continued. \u201cRegardless of the pre-determined outcome of this election, the United States will continue to stand with those who are pursuing a brighter future for Russia.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Secretary of State Antony Blinken denounced Russia\u2019s presidential elections on Wednesday after President Vladimir Putin was reelected in a landslide while facing no serious opposition.
