President Joe Biden in a wide-ranging interview with MSNBC on Saturday defended his direct criticism of the Supreme Court for its 2022 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health and said that he regrets having referred to an undocumented immigrant as an \u201cillegal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think they made a wrong decision. I think they read the Constitution wrong. I think they made a mistake,\u201d Biden told Jonathan Capehart, host of MSNBC\u2019s \u201cThe Saturday Show\u201d and \u201cThe Sunday Show,\u201d during an exclusive interview on the campaign trail in Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He echoed remarks he made during his State of the Union address on Thursday when he addressed Supreme Court justices in the room, telling them, \u201cWith all due respect, justices \u2026 you\u2019re about to realize just how much you got right\u201d about women\u2019s electoral power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey used the phrase that women can vote making change, if they want to,\u201d Biden told Capehart on Saturday, adding, \u201cI found that somewhat insulting, the idea that they don\u2019t think [women] can. Women are speaking now. They spoke out in 2022. They spoke out in 2024 \u2014 2020. This is what\u2019s going to happen. And I was just making clear, women speak up. This is going to change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biden\u2019s campaign also doubled down on his attacks on former President Donald Trump and the Supreme Court justices he appointed in a statement shared first with NBC News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the statement, a campaign spokesperson responded to news about the passage of a fetal personhood bill in the Iowa state House that could have negative implications for patients seeking in vitro fertilization treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIVF is at risk across the country and there\u2019s one man to blame: Donald Trump. Donald Trump proudly brags he was able to \u2018kill\u2019 Roe and now women across the country are facing the consequences. Trump\u2019s record speaks for itself: his Supreme Court pick Amy Coney Barrett refused to say if she would oppose criminalizing IVF,\u201d senior campaign spokesperson Lauren Hitt said in the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Saturday\u2019s interview, the president also said that he regrets using the word \u201cillegal\u201d to describe the undocumented immigrant who is charged with killing a 22-year-old nursing student in Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDuring your response to [Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene\u2019s] heckling of you, you used the word \u2018illegal\u2019 when talking about the man who allegedly killed Laken Riley,\u201d Capehart said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAn undocumented person. And I shouldn\u2019t have used \u2018illegal.\u2019 It\u2019s \u2018undocumented,\u2019\u201d Biden said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo you regret using that word?\u201d Capehart pressed him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes,\u201d Biden replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement marks an apparent reversal from what Biden said Friday. While at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, the president was asked, \u201cDo you regret using the word \u2018illegal\u2019 to describe immigrants last night, sir?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, I probably \u2014 I don\u2019t re \u2014 technically not supposed to be here,\u201d he responded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his State of the Union speech Thursday night, Biden used the term \u201can illegal\u201d to describe Jose Antonio Ibarra, a Venezuelan who was previously arrested by federal authorities after having crossed the border into the U.S. Ibarra has been charged with killing 22-year-old nursing student Laken Riley. The president did not mention Riley\u2019s case in his MSNBC interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biden said Saturday that in his speech to Congress, he was attempting to highlight the differences between rhetoric offered by himself and former President Donald Trump about the border, pledging not to \u201ctreat any of these people with disrespect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe talks about \u2018vermin.\u2019 The way he talks about these people \u2018polluting the blood.\u2019 I talked about what I\u2019m not going to do. What I won\u2019t do, I\u2019m not going to treat any of these people with disrespect,\u201d Biden said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president added, \u201cI don\u2019t share [Trump\u2019s] view at all,\u201d saying that immigrants \u201cbuilt the country, [are] the reason our economy is growing,\u201d but still, \u201cwe have to control the border and more orderly flow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ahead of a rally in Georgia on Saturday night, Trump met with Riley\u2019s parents backstage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When he took the stage later that evening, he mocked Biden\u2019s apology for using the word \u201cillegal,\u201d telling the crowd, \u201cThey have a new name that\u2019s even worse. They have a new name. You know what the new name is? Neighbor. They want to call them neighbor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chris LaCivita, a senior adviser to Trump’s campaign, told reporters before the rally that Biden\u2019s apology was \u201ctone deaf,\u201d saying, \u201cI mean he should be apologizing to the family, as opposed to apologizing for the word that he used.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his State of the Union, Biden did address Riley\u2019s parents, saying he understands the pain that comes with the loss of a child, having lost two himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked on Saturday about whether he has a \u201cred line\u201d with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu amid Israel\u2019s actions in the Israel-Hamas war, Biden suggested that some steps Netanyahu could take would be going too far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat is your red line with Prime Minister Netanyahu? Do you have a red line? For instance, would invasion of Rafah, which you have urged him not to do, would that be a red line?\u201d Capehart asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is a red line,” Biden said, adding, \u201cbut I\u2019m never gonna leave Israel. The defense of Israel is still critical.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, Biden was firm that Israel \u201ccannot have 30,000 more Palestinians dead as a consequence of going after [Hamas],\u201d likely citing figures showing that more than 30,000 people in Gaza have been killed, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
