In a statement released Wednesday, DeWit essentially confirmed the authenticity of the audio, although he called it \u201cselectively edited.\u201d Throughout the lengthy statement, he expressed more outrage toward Lake \u2014 who he said was employed by his private company \u2014 for recording their private conversation than for what was actually said, and he claimed that his discussion was \u201ctransparent\u201d and \u201cintended to offer perspective, not coercion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, throughout the audio recording, DeWit made it abundantly clear that the conversation \u201cnever happened,\u201d which seemingly debunks his claims of transparency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DeWit did not address the details of the recording, including the implied bribes and his own suggestion that something very bad could happen to him if he exposed these \u201cpowerful people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While DeWit said he intended to fight for his position, he said he received an ultimatum from Lake\u2019s team to resign or face the release of a \u201cnew, more damaging recording.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am truly unsure of its contents, but considering our numerous past open conversations as friends, I have decided not to take the risk,\u201d he said, ultimately resigning \u201cas Lake requested in the hope that she will honor her commitment to cease her attacks, allowing me to return to the business sector \u2014 a field I find much more logical and prefer over politics.\u201d He also added that he still supports former President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further, DeWit claimed that while he said things he regretted in the audio, he believes he was \u201cset up,\u201d accusing Lake of orchestrating the \u201centire situation to have control over the state party.\u201d He failed to explain, exactly, how Lake set him up, supposedly tricking him into relaying these alleged offers from \u201cpowerful people\u201d who do not want Lake to run for Senate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that he believes it is \u201cobvious from the recording that she crafted her performance responses with the knowledge that she was recording it, intending to use this recording later to portray herself as a hero in her own story\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The audio in question features a private conversation between DeWit and Lake, in which DeWit essentially asks Lake what it would take to have her at least \u201cpause\u201d her political ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The audio begins with Lake stating, \u201cThey\u2019re gonna have \u2014 try to have me murdered.\u201d DeWit responds by mentioning news about the cartel operating in 50 states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conversation continues as DeWit explains that \u201cpowerful people\u201d do not want Lake to run, which seems to rub Lake the wrong way, as she points out that they do not like her because they do not own or control her. DeWit, seemingly playing the devil\u2019s advocate, spins the narrative and asserts that it is not about \u201ccontrol\u201d but \u201cbeing on a team.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey want you to be on their team,\u201d he said, to which Lake responds, \u201cBut if they\u2019re pushing a globalist agenda, I can\u2019t do that. So what do they want? What do they want me to do?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DeWit \u2014 referring to \u201cvery powerful people who want to keep you out\u201d somewhere \u201cback east\u201d \u2014 said they are \u201cwilling to put their money where their mouth is in a big way,\u201d essentially implying a bribe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lake responded by pointing out that this effort from these \u201cpowerful people\u201d is really about defeating Trump, which she said is \u201cbad\u201d for the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DeWit continued to pitch the request from these nameless, faceless individuals, stating that Lake \u201ccan\u2019t scratch their back,\u201d and that is how the D.C. swamp works. Essentially, he asked for her price to halt her political plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey\u2019re gonna have to fucking kill me to stop me,\u201d she said. \u201cEither they come around and try to work with me \u2013\u201d she continued before getting cut off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going to let these people back in D.C. tell me not to run. I\u2019m not going to pause for two years. The battle is now. I\u2019m offended by whoever these people are that they\u2019re trying to buy me out,\u201d she said, as DeWit told her she should be \u201chonored,\u201d as \u201cvery few people get this\u201d treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIs there a number of which \u2013\u201d DeWit began, prompting Lake to finish his thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI can be bought?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, it\u2019s about you take a pause,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo. No. $10 million, $20 million, 30, no no no. A billion \u2014 no. This is not about money. This is about our country. I think it\u2019s disturbing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am not going to let these people who hate our country tell me not to run. You should call them and tell them to get behind me. I can win, and they should get behind me,\u201d Lake continued, describing these \u201cpowerful people\u201d as \u201cunAmerican\u201d and \u201cunethical.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJust it\u2019s very powerful people that are willing to \u2014 they really want someone different,\u201d DeWit pressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think you should go public with this,\u201d Lake said, urging DeWit to show the world the corruption that goes on behind the scenes. DeWit immediately said \u201cNo, no, no, no,\u201d before essentially suggesting that he would be killed if he did so: \u201cThen I turn the key in my car\u201d he said, making an explosion sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTell them I\u2019m not flattered. \u2026 I\u2019m offended that they don\u2019t care about our country more. They don\u2019t care about our country,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the audio, DeWit made it clear that the conversation \u201cnever happened\u201d before asking one more time for a counteroffer from Lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
