At least four people have died as communities begin taking stock of the damage left by Isaias<\/a>, which came ashore as a Category 2 hurricane in Florida late Oct. 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Isaias is now a post-tropical cyclone, with its center about 180 miles northeast of Nashville as of the National Hurricane Center’s final update at 11 a.m. ET. The storm tore roofs off hotels and condominiums along the Florida Panhandle before heading toward the Appalachians, according to The Associated Press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The news organization reported that weather stations in western North Carolina recorded as much as 9.57 inches of rain as Isaias moved through the region. The highest reported rainfall total was\u00a012.97 inches in Bellwood, Alabama<\/a>, according to AccuWeather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Isaias ended two years without a U.S. hurricane landfall, with the most recent being Hurricane Milton in October 2024, two years to the day before Isaias made landfall. Recovery efforts are underway in Alabama and Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gov. Ron DeSantis<\/a> said during an Oct. 11 visit to a Waffle House in Milton, Florida, that northern Santa Rosa County was probably the area hardest hit by the storm, according to the Pensacola News Journal<\/a>, part of the USA TODAY Network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deaths from Isaias<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the Birmingham, Alabama, area, a person was killed when a tree fell on their home, Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency Director Jim Coker told NPR<\/a>. In Barbour County, a driver died in a wreck that involved fallen trees, the Alabama Reflector<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Florida officials confirmed two deaths in Escambia County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A woman, whom Accuweather<\/a> identified as 57-year-old Jen Williams, was pinned beneath a falling tree inside her home. Her stepson Zane Williams told Accuweather that she was a “good woman” and “a wonderful mom.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Separately, a man was found inside a closed garage in which he’d been running a generator. Four others were hospitalized in the same incident, according to NPR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Isaias’ storm track and threat today?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The National Hurricane Center predicts Isaias will drop heavy rain across the central Appalachians and mid-Atlantic on Sunday, Oct. 11, bringing potential isolated and urban flooding. There’s also a chance for some tornadoes in the Piedmont and coastal plain area of Virginia and North Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The storm will also bring strong wind gusts across the Southeast, particularly near the southern Appalachians, the center forecast said. Scattered power outages and downed trees remain likely, the center added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, ocean swells continue affecting the Gulf and southeastern Atlantic coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AccuWeather predicts 2-4 inches of rain could be seen from far eastern North Carolina into the Delmarva Peninsula through Monday, Oct. 12. The forecaster says 1-2 inches of rain could fall on areas further north and west.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Power outages remain after Isaias’ arrival<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

More than 330,000 customers remained without power in Alabama and the western Florida Panhandle, where Isaias made landfall, as of 3:30 p.m. ET, according to the USA TODAY power outage tracker<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Conecuh County, Alabama, 99% of accounts are without power, representing about 582 addresses. In Bay County, Florida, home to Panama City, about 6,310 outages remained as of Sunday afternoon, representing about 5% of accounts, according to the tracker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Power is expected to be restored by Monday, Oct. 12, afternoon or evening to all but a few outlying North Florida counties, Florida Power & Light said, according to the Pensacola News Journal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an Oct. 10 statement to the Montgomery Advertiser, part of the USA TODAY Network, Alabama Power said, “crews are already in the field restoring service where it’s safe to do so, and they’ll continue working around the clock to assess damage and restore power to customers.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Milton, crews worked to repair downed power lines after the storm snapped trees and power poles, and tore roofs off some buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
