{"id":17787,"date":"2026-10-07T16:02:01","date_gmt":"2026-10-07T08:02:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/?p=17787"},"modified":"2026-10-07T16:02:09","modified_gmt":"2026-10-07T08:02:09","slug":"fuel-industry-warns-truck-stops-not-to-sell-red-dye-diesel-after-trump-lifts-restrictions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/?p=17787","title":{"rendered":"Fuel industry warns truck stops not to sell red dye diesel after Trump lifts restrictions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Truck stops nationwide were warned to \u201cproceed with caution\u201d Tuesday by a major industry group after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to promote the use of red dye diesel fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Red dye diesel is exempt from federal excise taxes because it is intended for farm equipment and other off-road uses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The order, signed before farmers in Nebraska on Monday night, aims to bring down fuel prices by \u201ctemporarily\u201d allowing highway use of red-dye diesel fuel,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/releases\/2026\/10\/president-trump-takes-decisive-action-to-lower-diesel-costs-for-american-truckers-farmers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to a White House statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. voters are deeply frustrated by the high price of gas, and the Trump administration is under intense pressure to bring down fuel costs before the Nov. 3 midterm elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monday\u2019s order instructs Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to \u201cdefer certain diesel fuel tax payment obligations and to provide penalty relief to the extent permitted by law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It does not waive the federal taxes because only Congress can eliminate a tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following Trump\u2019s directive, the Energy Marketers of America warned gas stations to \u201cproceed with caution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhether relief is available, whom it covers, and on what conditions depend on Treasury determinations and guidance not yet issued,\u201d the group said. \u201cDeferral is not forgiveness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moreover, the order does not \u201cresolve EPA or state restrictions\u201d on the dyed variety of diesel fuel, the EMA said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other trucking and gas industry groups sounded a similar note of caution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe White House appears to be trying to encourage the supply chain to move toward selling dyed fuel in non-traditional ways,\u201d the Society of Independent Gasoline Marketers of America and National Association of Truck Stop Owners said in a note to their members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe do not expect most reputable diesel retailers and fuel marketers to do this,\u201d they said. \u201cFirst, the tax is still owed, so there\u2019s limited upside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, \u201cthe logistical challenges outweigh any visible upside: Residual dye lingers in tanks and fuel systems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For most fuel sellers, \u201cthe liability and customer risk outweigh any temporary, uncertain benefit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The White House did not immediately reply to a request for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"513\" src=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/1-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17788\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/1-5.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/1-5-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Despite an executive order promoting red dye diesel, trucking and fuel industry groups are warning their members it may not be worth the risk. (Clayton Steward \/ Bloomberg via Getty)\u00a9\u00a0Clayton Steward<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A group representing independent long haul truckers also suggested Trump\u2019s move would provide little benefit to its members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAllowing the wider use of red-dyed diesel will provide minimal relief. Market stability is essential to bring down costs for the long haul,\u201d said Todd Spencer, president of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the war with Iran began, the price of diesel has surged from $3.76 per gallon to $6.32 as of Tuesday, a nearly 70% increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Iran conflict is not the only conflict contributing to diesel\u2019s skyrocketing price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A recent escalation of the Ukraine-Russia war has included strikes by Ukrainian drones on Russian refineries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditionally one of the world\u2019s large diesel exporters, Russia has responded to the attacks by imposing a diesel export ban through at least the end of October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump has urged Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelenskyy&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/ukraine\/trump-calls-ukraine-halt-strikes-russian-diesel-fuel-citing-global-sho-rcna597637\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to halt strikes on Russia\u2019s diesel infrastructure.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMr. Zelenskyy has to do one thing. He has to stop knocking out diesel fuel in Russia,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/ukraine\/trump-calls-ukraine-halt-strikes-russian-diesel-fuel-citing-global-sho-rcna597637\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump told reporters in early September.&nbsp;<\/a>\u201cThere are plenty of other targets. Don\u2019t hit diesel fuel, because that\u2019s hurting the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oil prices also remain sharply elevated since the beginning of the year.
