This is more difficult than that was,\u201d Gates said, later adding that the U.S. cooperated with other countries to handle a slew of issues from aviation safety to nuclear proliferation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd AI is one we\u2019re going to have to go back to this, \u2018Hey, we\u2019re all in \u2013\u2013 humanity is all in this together,&#8217;\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gates insisted that law enforcement and lawmakers should collaborate on what \u201csafeguard and monitoring look[s] like,\u201d without a \u201cdramatic slowing\u201d of development from tech companies. Legislation placing regulations on AI, he added, should \u201cabsolutely\u201d be passed, saying self-moderation from the tech companies is not enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Microsoft co-founder has been among the many voices warning of AI\u2019s potential dangers for humans. Welker raised this point and asked Gates if AI could possibly end human life on Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAI is certainly powerful enough to drive events that cause a billion deaths,\u201d he said. \u201cSo even though it\u2019s pretty hard to get to 100 percent, there\u2019s never been a weapon as powerful as the combination of people with ill intent using the latest AI tools.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that discussions happening within the industry about the risks posed by AI was \u201cgreat,\u201d but the next problem is coming from those \u201ceither discounting this or just thinking of this as a competition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd it\u2019s very scary that we don\u2019t have all of the thinkers saying, \u2018How do we want to shape this?&#8217;\u201d Gates continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Concern over the risks posed by AI and recent hacks committed by rogue AI software have led to a growing chorus of lawmakers and tech leaders calling for greater regulation on the advancing technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remarks made by former Anthropic and OpenAI researcher Jacob Coxon suggesting AI could wipe out humanity by the end of the decade raised alarms, along with some dismissals, including from President Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rogue AI software has made headlines in recent weeks, including one involving an AI model from OpenAI that hacked Australia\u2019s health department website in June. AI models from OpenAI made an unsuccessful attempt to hack the Education Department\u2019s Office for Civil Rights website and meddled with data from the Securities and Exchange Commission and Census Bureau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tech leaders called on world leaders to pursue safeguards on their developing AI technology during the United Nations General Assembly last week.
