{"id":17513,"date":"2026-09-09T12:35:51","date_gmt":"2026-09-09T04:35:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/?p=17513"},"modified":"2026-09-09T12:35:56","modified_gmt":"2026-09-09T04:35:56","slug":"iceland-summons-us-ambassador-after-trump-post-showing-american-flag-covering-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/?p=17513","title":{"rendered":"Iceland summons US ambassador after Trump post showing American flag covering island"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"649\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/145.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17514\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/145.png 649w, https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/145-300x208.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 649px) 100vw, 649px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iceland\u2019s government called in the U.S. ambassador on Monday after President Trump posted a map showing the Nordic nation blanketed by the American flag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump, who has previously pushed to take over Greenland and Canada, posted an image to Truth Social of the American flag stretching across North America, Greenland, Iceland, Central America and the Caribbean, with the map labeled \u201cUnited States of America.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump did not offer an explanation for the post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Icelandic Foreign Minister \u00deorger\u00f0ur Katr\u00edn Gunnarsd\u00f3ttir summoned U.S. Ambassador to Iceland Billy Long over the image, according to Icelandic public broadcaster RUV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Foreign Ministry told the outlet that officials made clear to Long, a former Missouri lawmaker and IRS commissioner who became ambassador in May, that Trump\u2019s post was \u201ccompletely inappropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Long himself had previously apologized for joking about Iceland becoming the 52nd U.S. state with himself as governor, which had caused widespread outrage from Icelandic citizens and prompted a petition to prevent his ambassadorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a press conference Tuesday, Gunnarsd\u00f3ttir said the message was \u201cabsurd\u201d and insulting to Icelanders, as well as citizens of Greenland and Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is nothing funny or normal about making fun of the sovereignty of states,\u201d she said. \u201cIf this is supposed to be a joke, then it is a bad joke.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Trump has not formally pushed to take over Iceland in the past, Trump\u2019s interest in acquiring Greenland, a semiautonomous territory, from Denmark has led to escalating tensions. Its leaders have said repeatedly that the island is not for sale and does not want to become part of the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reiterated that position Monday while visiting Greenland\u2019s capital city of Nuuk, saying its government and its residents have repeatedly made clear that they have no interest in being acquired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Greenlandic government and the Greenlandic people have said again and again that they do not want to be American,\u201d she told Danish news agency Ritzau. \u201cI hope no one is in any doubt about that, either in the United States or the rest of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Iceland\u2019s government called in the U.S. ambassador on Monday after President Trump posted a map showing the Nordic nation blanketed by the American flag.
