{"id":17439,"date":"2026-09-04T16:31:47","date_gmt":"2026-09-04T08:31:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/?p=17439"},"modified":"2026-09-04T16:31:56","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T08:31:56","slug":"trump-moves-to-strip-tax-exempt-status-from-schools-that-consider-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/?p=17439","title":{"rendered":"Trump moves to strip tax-exempt status from schools that consider race"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/HXVZTOOTWZPC3PWO2CIMOPV7RM.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/HXVZTOOTWZPC3PWO2CIMOPV7RM.avif 720w, https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/HXVZTOOTWZPC3PWO2CIMOPV7RM-300x200.avif 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Donald Trump\u2019s administration on Thursday proposed new regulations that would strip schools of tax-exempt status if \u200bthey offer targeted support to specific racial groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rules proposed by the U.S. Treasury Department \u200cand Internal Revenue Service are the latest salvo in the administration\u2019s campaign to\u00a0eradicate diversity programs\u00a0and end what officials say is discrimination against white students in favor of students of color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Civil rights advocates say diversity practices help address \u200bhistoric inequities for marginalized ethnic minorities who were legally discriminated against for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposal, which \u200bis subject to a public comment period and would likely draw legal challenges if \u2060implemented, draws on recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings that limited how colleges and universities can consider \u200brace in admissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Treasury\u2019s proposal would cover admissions, educational policies, scholarships and loans, athletics and \u201cevery other school-administered or \u200bschool-supported program.\u201d It would apply to programs that consider race \u201cfor any purpose,\u201d including mitigating past racial discrimination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSchools rebranding race-based preferences as equitable, inclusive, or diversity-enhancing does not change their discriminatory nature,\u201d Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a \u200bstatement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The American Association of University Professors, which advocates for academic freedom and has sued the Trump administration \u200bto block funding cuts, said it is considering legal action in response to the proposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is not neutral enforcement \u200cof \u2060civil-rights law. It is an affirmative attempt to turn civil-rights law against the very people it was enacted to protect,\u201d AAUP President Todd Wolfson said in a statement. &#8220;For half a century, federal policy recognized that measures intended to dismantle entrenched racial exclusion are not equivalent to policies designed to preserve it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u200bTreasury estimated the change \u200bcould affect as many \u2060as 18,000 schools at all education levels and 750,000 students who may qualify for race-based scholarships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposal would not bar private schools from maintaining a \u200breligious mission, curriculum or program, and religious schools could continue selecting students \u200bbased on religious \u2060affiliation, according to a Treasury Department statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Treasury also said the proposal would not prevent schools from assisting disadvantaged students using race-neutral criteria such as income, geography or first-generation status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Trump administration has cracked down on \u2060diversity policies \u200bat colleges.
