U.S. President Donald Trump accused ExxonMobil (XOM.N), opens new tab and Chevron (CVX.N), opens new tab on Monday of making “too much money” \u200boff higher fuel prices and said the oil giants should “give some of that back to the public,” a notable break from his \u200cusual alliance with the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I don’t like it,” Trump told reporters on Monday, three days after the companies reported blowout second-quarter earnings as the ongoing war in Iran keeps oil prices high. \u201cChevron, too much money. ExxonMobil, too much. Too much money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exxon and Chevron did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump has frequently used public pressure as a tool to \u200bpush corporate America to change its behavior, often targeting companies directly through social media or remarks to reporters. During his first term, he \u200bpressured automakers to keep production in the U.S., criticized defense contractors over costs and urged pharmaceutical companies to lower drug \u2060prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since returning to office, he has continued that approach, using the power of the presidential platform to try to influence corporate decisions without always relying \u200bon formal government action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier on Monday, Trump called out Chevron (CVX.N), opens new tab Chief Executive Mike Wirth’s appearance on the Fox News program “Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo” for not crediting \u200bhis administration’s efforts to help the oil industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The only thing he conveniently forgot to mention is that, without the genius, foresight, strength, and stability, of the TRUMP Administration, the Oil Industry, and our Country itself, would be DEAD!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. “As an example, they threw Mike and Chevron out of Venezuela, but now they’re back, far \u200bbigger and stronger than ever before, expecting to make a fortune!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chevron has operated in Venezuela for more than a century. The company remained in the country when \u200bformer President Hugo Chavez nationalized oil projects in 2007, while ExxonMobil (XOM.N), opens new tab and ConocoPhillips (COP.N), opens new tab decided to exit Venezuela.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A spokesperson for the American Petroleum Institute, a trade organization representing U.S. \u200coil firms, said, “Today’s higher \u2060prices are driven by global supply, demand and continued uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz and other critical shipping lanes \u2014 not by any one company.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TRUMP DEMANDS LOWER PRICES AT THE PUMP<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump has made expanding U.S. energy production a centerpiece of his agenda, encouraging more drilling and calling for increased oil and gas output.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The industry has broadly welcomed those policies, but Trump has also repeatedly pressed producers to keep fuel prices low, creating tension between his push to maximize domestic \u200bproduction and his demands that companies limit \u200bprofits when prices rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They better \u2060cut the retail price, the consumer price,\u201d Trump told reporters on Monday, adding that oil prices would “drop through the floor” when the conflict with Iran ends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Higher gas prices fueled by the Iran war and cost-of-living concerns pose a political \u200brisk to Trump ahead of November’s midterm elections when his fellow Republicans are seeking to retain control of \u200bCongress. Retail gasoline prices, \u2060currently averaging around $4.10 nationwide, have climbed more than 30% since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While global oil prices plunged after Trump called off a planned “massive attack” on Iran over the weekend, prices at the gas pump tend to lag and do not necessarily follow suit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week’s earnings from ExxonMobil, Chevron, \u2060Valero Energy (VLO.N), opens new tab \u200band Marathon Petroleum (MPC.N), opens new tab highlighted the boost U.S. oil companies received from higher crude prices and \u200brefining margins after the war began in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
