{"id":17010,"date":"2026-08-04T10:13:03","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T02:13:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/?p=17010"},"modified":"2026-08-04T10:13:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T02:13:12","slug":"capital-one-says-trump-organization-accounts-were-closed-after-money-laundering-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/?p=17010","title":{"rendered":"Capital One says Trump Organization accounts were closed after money laundering review"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"367\" height=\"195\" src=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/124.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17011\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/124.png 367w, https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/124-300x159.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 367px) 100vw, 367px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While attorneys for the Trump Organization, led by Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, have alleged Capital One closed more than 300 Trump-linked accounts in 2021 over politics, lawyers for the defendants wrote in a Friday court filing that the financial institution closed the accounts \u201cfor anti-money laundering\u201d reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe closures were the result of months of analysis and a careful review by Capital One\u2019s [anti-money laundering] team in accordance with bank policies and regulatory guidance,\u201d added the 23-page motion, filed in federal court in the Southern District of Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCapital One never publicized the termination decision nor its confidential internal process giving rise to the closure, and it permitted Plaintiffs several months (and granted several extensions) to find new banking services, which they did,\u201d the filing continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Hill has reached out to Capitol One and the Trump Organization for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The president and his allies have accused major financial institutions of \u201cdebanking\u201d prominent conservatives over their political views. Earlier this year, President Trump sued JPMorgan Chase for closing his accounts in 2021 and sought at least $5 billion in damages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. District Judge Roy Altman in March granted Capital One\u2019s motion to dismiss the initial lawsuit brought by the president\u2019s trust against the bank. But Altman, whom President Trump appointed, gave the plaintiffs a \u201climited discovery period\u201d to refile the suit, Friday\u2019s filing from Capital One noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow, after more than three months of discovery, Plaintiffs\u2019 Second Amended Complaint (\u2018SAC\u2019) suffers from the same fundamental flaws as their prior two pleadings and should be dismissed for many of the same reasons set forth in this Court\u2019s prior dismissal,\u201d attorneys for Capital One wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The filing also argues that the plaintiffs \u201ccannot meaningfully criticize the robust process\u201d by which Capital One\u2019s anti-money laundering team undertook before closing the accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roughly two months before it closed the Trump Organization\u2019s affiliated accounts, Capital One received a $390,000 penalty from the Treasury Department\u2019s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network \u2014 issued after the bank admitted to failing to implement an effective anti-money laundering program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in asking Altman to dismiss the second lawsuit entirely, thereby barring the Trump Organization from filing another complaint, lawyers for Capital One wrote the bank\u2019s anti-money laundering team leveraged its \u201cdecades of law enforcement experience\u201d and closed the Trump-affiliated accounts in a lawful manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cInstead, Plaintiffs attempt to keep their misguided allegations of political discrimination alive by speculating that Capital One\u2019s anti-money laundering concerns were pretextual and claiming that Plaintiffs were somehow \u2018misled\u2019 by the contractually permitted closure decision,\u201d the attorneys added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While attorneys for the Trump Organization, led by Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, have alleged Capital One closed more than 300 Trump-linked accounts in 2021 over politics, lawyers for the defendants wrote in a Friday court filing that the financial institution closed the accounts \u201cfor anti-money laundering\u201d reasons. \u201cThe closures were the result of [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":17011,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[1724,61],"class_list":["post-17010","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-international","tag-trump","tag-usa"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.0 -
