And they clearly learned nothing from this because this is exactly what the Trump administration is doing,\u201d Matthews said Friday on MS NOW\u2019s \u201cDeadline: White House\u201d with Nicolle Wallace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019re trying to gaslight their voters and tell them, \u2018Everything\u2019s fine,\u2019 putting Kevin Hassett out there and having him go on the news and say that the economy is amazing. I mean, are you kidding me?\u201d she added, referring to the National Economic Council director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her comments came after Trump hammered down on the positive impact of tariffs during remarks at General Motors\u2019s Milford Proving Ground in Michigan last week and just a day after Hassett said the economy was doing \u201camazing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell, again, right now the economy does look amazing to me. The inflation\u2019s going down, the unemployment rate is low,\u201d Hassett said during a CNN appearance, where he denied poll results that found Americans believe the country\u2019s financial health was currently very poor or somewhat poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen you\u2019ve got strong consumption growth, like we\u2019re seeing right now, then consumers are by definition very optimistic. They\u2019re not being cautious at all. So I just don\u2019t believe that poll,\u201d Hassett told anchor Pamela Brown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Matthews argued economic pains have been \u201cself-inflicted\u201d by the second Trump administration through the Iran war and \u201casinine\u201d tariffs that have caused people to \u201cfeel bamboozled.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey voted for President Trump because he said that he was going to lower prices on day one. He said that he was going to be the peace president.
