{"id":16830,"date":"2026-07-23T08:43:29","date_gmt":"2026-07-23T00:43:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/?p=16830"},"modified":"2026-07-23T08:43:35","modified_gmt":"2026-07-23T00:43:35","slug":"canada-cancels-opening-ceremony-for-bridge-connecting-detroit-windsor-after-new-trump-tariffs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/?p=16830","title":{"rendered":"Canada cancels opening ceremony for bridge connecting Detroit, Windsor after new Trump tariffs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"446\" height=\"343\" src=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/114.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16835\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/114.png 446w, https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/114-300x231.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 446px) 100vw, 446px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A planned joint ceremony on Friday between the U.S. and Canada marking the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge has been canceled after President Trump announced a 50 percent tariff on certain Canadian imports, including alcohol and dairy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tariffs were in response to what the administration described as \u201cdiscriminatory\u201d trade measures from Canada, and a senior administration official confirmed to reporters that it impacted products ranging from \u201cwine to hockey sticks to cement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this month, the two countries agreed to open the long-delayed $4.7 billion bridge connecting Detroit to Windsor, Ontario, following a slate of negotiations that Trump said brought a \u201cmuch better deal\u201d for the U.S. on toll revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn light of trade action threatened by the United States earlier this week, it would be inappropriate to proceed with a celebratory event between the two countries,\u201d Jenna Ghassabeh, a spokesperson for Canadian Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson, said in a statement to the Associated Press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe remain committed to opening the bridge on July 27th, and to celebrating this milestone among Canadians on July 24th,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canada now plans to hold its own opening ceremony on Friday, ahead of its planned opening on July 27. It is unclear whether the U.S. will hold its own separate ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two U.S. officials familiar with internal deliberations told the AP that while the bridge is still expected to open to traffic on July 27, they are less certain of that timeline than they were prior to Trump\u2019s tariff announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 1.5-mile bridge is expected to become a major commercial crossing between the U.S. and Canada.
