Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.) sparred with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Tuesday over whether the U.S. military obtained an \u201coverwhelming victory\u201d in Iran as he declared in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou said, \u2018Operation Epic Fury was a historic and overwhelming victory.\u2019 You said Iran\u2019s military had been rendered, \u2018combat ineffective for years to come,\u2019 and you stated we had \u2018achieved every single objective,\u201d Ossoff told Hegseth during his testimony before the Senate Appropriations Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWere those accurate statements?\u201d Ossoff asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hegseth said at the time service members had achieved a \u201chistoric military victory over Iran\u201d pointing to the U.S. military\u2019s strikes on Tehran\u2019s air force, navy and defense industrial base as sign of the foreign force\u2019s ineffectiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ossoff wasn\u2019t satisfied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou stated four months ago that Iran\u2019s military had been rendered \u2018combat ineffective for years to come,\u2019\u201d the lawmaker said, repeating his question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHas Iran\u2019s military been for the last four months combat ineffective?\u201d the Georgia Senator asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hegseth responded by stating Iran\u2019s military has been set back \u201cnot just years,\u201d but likely \u201cdecades\u201d but noted that the diminished army still has \u201ccapabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo one ever stated that every single missile was gone. Ultimately, combat ineffective means they\u2019re not able to dig them out of their UGFs and shoot them,\u201d the defense secretary said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt doesn\u2019t mean they don\u2019t have underground facilities where they put missiles in them and hold on to them because they\u2019re the world\u2019s largest state sponsor of terrorism,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ossoff said the goals laid out by the Trump administration were not achieved. Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) followed the line of questioning by telling Hegseth he\u2019s a \u201cfailure\u201d for not developing a winning strategy in the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peters said the defense secretary failed to inform President Trump of the risks posed to the Strait of Hormuz and argued he did not have a plan to end the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou, sir, are the failure. Not the men and women who are on that front line,\u201d Peters fired back. \u201cNot the men and women who hold up their honor with distinction. But if there\u2019s a lack of a winning strategy, they\u2019re in harm\u2019s way. Their leaders have failed them\u2026\u201d Peters said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou don\u2019t have a strategy. You don\u2019t have a long-term plan to actually win this war.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sen.
