Bill Cassidy (R-La.), chair of the Senate Health Committee, grew angry with President Trump\u2019s nominee to lead the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR) during his confirmation hearing on Wednesday over a misleading social media post about the hepatitis B vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sean Kaufman, Trump\u2019s nominee to lead ASPR, appeared before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions during which Cassidy used his time to question him on a past LinkedIn post he\u2019d written about the hepatitis B vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cassidy, a longtime physician, is a staunch advocate of immunizations against hepatitis B as he had specialized in treating liver conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a since-deleted LinkedIn post published in May 2025, Kaufman argued against administering the birth dose of the hepatitis B vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMost parents aren\u2019t letting their babies run around practicing high-risk sexual behaviors or sharing needles. So, what\u2019s the rush? Why is this standard practice in the U.S.?\u201d Kaufman wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMany countries\u2014Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, the UK\u2014don\u2019t even offer Hep B vaccines to infants. Some countries don\u2019t offer it at all,\u201d he added. \u201cCurious about where Hep B is most prevalent? Here\u2019s a handy graph. And just for fun, China, India, and Indonesia vaccinate at birth\u2014ironic, considering they lead the pack in Hep B rates.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cassidy commented on this post, noting that the countries Kaufman cited as administering the birth dose do so because they have the highest rates of hepatitis B being passed from mother to infant. The senator called Kaufman\u2019s post \u201ceither uninformed or deliberately misleading.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Slamming his hand on the dais, Cassidy half-shouted at Kaufman, \u201cI don\u2019t know what you were thinking. Why would you say \u2014 why would you repeat those damn lies?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause that destroys trust, and we don\u2019t start getting back to where we trust unless people speak the truth,\u201d said Cassidy. \u201cI\u2019m sorry to be kind of worked up about this, but I\u2019ve seen people die from these vaccine-preventable diseases, including hepatitis B, and you\u2019re going to be one of the leaders in our response.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response, Kaufman said he had taken down that LinkedIn post for \u201cmultiple reasons\u201d including that it was \u201cactually dividing people.\u201d In the same post, he had written, \u201cIf you call me an antivaxxer, then I\u2019ll be forced to call you a pedophile.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut that post did have a critical aspect within that post, Senator Cassidy,\u201d added Kaufman. \u201cI did say that I\u2019ve always believed that vaccines are the gold standard of public health.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He denied linking vaccinations to autism or allergies, though Cassidy argued he had created a link by including the topics in the same post as vaccinations.
