Williams referred a Trump lawyer in the case, Alejandro Brito, and senior Justice Department officials who signed off on the settlement to state bar authorities to determine if their actions violated legal ethics rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"674\" src=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/\u4f01\u4e1a\u5fae\u4fe1\u622a\u56fe_20260714162730-1024x674.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16706\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/\u4f01\u4e1a\u5fae\u4fe1\u622a\u56fe_20260714162730-1024x674.png 1024w, https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/\u4f01\u4e1a\u5fae\u4fe1\u622a\u56fe_20260714162730-300x198.png 300w, https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/\u4f01\u4e1a\u5fae\u4fe1\u622a\u56fe_20260714162730-768x506.png 768w, https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/\u4f01\u4e1a\u5fae\u4fe1\u622a\u56fe_20260714162730.png 1045w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a 56-page ruling, Williams concluded \u200bthat attorneys on both sides of the case &#8211; Trump&#8217;s personal lawyers and lawyers for the DOJ and IRS &#8211; misused the legal system to provide cover for \u200bactions aimed at benefiting Trump and his allies.<br>&#8220;This action was never about a party seeking judicial resolution of a legal issue or \u2060a factual dispute,&#8221; Williams wrote. The judge said it was instead an attempt to &#8220;provide some legitimacy to an agreement to confer immunity to people and entities affiliated with the \u200bpresident and to earmark billions of dollars from American taxpayers to redress grievances not defined in the law.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump sued the IRS in January, accusing the agency of not doing enough to prevent the leak of his tax records during his first term in office and initially seeking $10 billion.<br>The settlement came under withering scrutiny from critics, including some Republican lawmakers, who accused the Trump administration of self-dealing and seeking to funnel taxpayer money to political allies.
