A senior FCC official told reporters the proposal \u200bto be released this week raises the question of whether \u200bthe program has fulfilled its mission and whether continued funding \u2060is consistent with Congress&#8217; objective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"629\" height=\"412\" src=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/\u4f01\u4e1a\u5fae\u4fe1\u622a\u56fe_20260604100928.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/\u4f01\u4e1a\u5fae\u4fe1\u622a\u56fe_20260604100928.png 629w, https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/\u4f01\u4e1a\u5fae\u4fe1\u622a\u56fe_20260604100928-300x197.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 629px) 100vw, 629px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FCC Chairman Brendan Carr said in a \u200bstatement the commission is launching a complete review of the E-Rate program, \u200band the FCC will take an initial vote on the proposal on June 25. &#8220;The FCC has been subsidizing connectivity to and within schools for almost 30 years now \u2014 \u200bspending roughly $3 billion annually at this point,&#8221; Carr said, pledging a &#8220;smart \u200breview of the E-Rate program.&#8221;<br>He noted the review comes as states address excessive screen \u200ctime \u2060in schools, with some school districts removing devices and reducing screen time, particularly for younger children.<br>The FCC is seeking public comment on potential legal and policy considerations for assessing children\u2019s screen time, as well as protecting \u200bchildren and empowering \u200bparents, guardians, and \u2060teachers in decision-making involving children\u2019s access to subsidized internet service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">E-Rate is funded by fees paid by telecom companies \u200bthat are collected from consumers through the &#8220;Universal Service Fee&#8221; \u200bon \u2060monthly phone bills.<br>The FCC in September voted to end government subsidies for wireless use on school buses.
