Republican leaders of the U.S. House of Representatives unexpectedly canceled a vote on Thursday on a resolution seeking to end the Iran war \u200bunless President Donald Trump obtains Congress’ authorization, two days after a similar \u200cmeasure advanced in the U.S. Senate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vote had been scheduled to take place late Thursday afternoon, just before lawmakers left Washington for their Memorial Day recess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The House had blocked three previous war \u200bpowers resolutions in close votes earlier this year, with near-unanimous support from Republicans, \u200bunderscoring the strong backing for the Iran war and the president \u2060within his party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the margins had become increasingly narrow – the last resolution failed on \u200ba tie vote – as weeks passed since the U.S. and Israel began striking Iran \u200bon February 28. Thursday’s measure looked likely to pass, given expected defections by a handful of Republicans and the absences of others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We had the votes without question, and they knew it,” Representative \u200bGregory Meeks, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told reporters after \u200bthe vote was canceled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the chamber’s Republican leaders had delayed the vote until early June, \u200cafter \u2060the Memorial Day recess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Democrats, and a few Republicans, have called on Trump to come to Congress for authorization to use military force, noting that the U.S. Constitution says that Congress, not the president, can declare war. They have expressed concerns that Trump \u200bmay have entered the \u200bcountry into a \u2060long conflict without setting out a clear strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most Republicans, and the White House, say Trump’s actions are legal and within his \u200brights as commander-in-chief to protect the U.S. by ordering limited military \u200boperations to \u2060stop imminent threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Republicans control narrow majorities in both the House and Senate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Tuesday, the Senate advanced a separate, but similar, war powers resolution, in a rar rebuke of Trump. That \u2060procedural \u200bvote on whether to advance the measure for further \u200bvotes was 50 to 47, as four of Trump’s fellow Republicans voted with every Senate Democrat but one \u200bin favor.
