Stories of people stuck on a cruise ship with a deadly disease going around brought back memories surrounding the first period of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, acting Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Jay Bhattacharya said Sunday that hantavirus \u201cis not COVID.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been communicating the last week as the \u2014 as the sort of \u2026 press attention has picked up more with the public, as is appropriate, given the nature of this disease,\u201d Bhattacharya told CNN\u2019s Jake Tapper on \u201cState of the Union.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe key message I want to send to your audience is that this is not COVID, this is not going to have \u2014 lead to the kind of outbreak,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bhattacharya previously said the risk to most Americans is \u201cvery low\u201d from hantavirus, a strain of the Andes virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHantavirus is not spread by people without symptoms, transmission requires close contact, and the risk to the American public is very low,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HHS said in a post on the social platform X late Sunday that it was \u201csupporting @StateDept in the repatriation of 17 American citizens from the MV Hondius cruise ship affected by the Andes variant of hantavirus.\u201d \u201cAll 17 are currently en route via @StateDept airlift to the United States, with two of the passengers [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":16026,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[61],"class_list":["post-16025","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-international","tag-usa"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.0 -
