Different groups nominated 34 conference vice \u200bpresidents, and the conference chair, Vietnam&#8217;s U.N. ambassador Do Hung Viet, said Iran was picked by &#8220;the \u200bgroup of non-aligned and other states.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"674\" src=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/\u4f01\u4e1a\u5fae\u4fe1\u622a\u56fe_20260428153619-1024x674.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15874\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/\u4f01\u4e1a\u5fae\u4fe1\u622a\u56fe_20260428153619-1024x674.png 1024w, https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/\u4f01\u4e1a\u5fae\u4fe1\u622a\u56fe_20260428153619-300x198.png 300w, https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/\u4f01\u4e1a\u5fae\u4fe1\u622a\u56fe_20260428153619-768x506.png 768w, https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/\u4f01\u4e1a\u5fae\u4fe1\u622a\u56fe_20260428153619-1536x1011.png 1536w, https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/\u4f01\u4e1a\u5fae\u4fe1\u622a\u56fe_20260428153619.png 1601w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Christopher Yeaw, assistant secretary for the U.S. Bureau of \u2060Arms Control and Nonproliferation, told the conference that Iran&#8217;s selection was an &#8220;affront&#8221; to the NPT.<br>He said it \u200bwas &#8220;indisputable that Iran has long demonstrated its contempt for the non-proliferation commitments of the NPT,&#8221; and had refused \u200bto cooperate with the U.N. nuclear watchdog to resolve questions about its program.<br>He called Iran&#8217;s selection &#8220;beyond shameful and an embarrassment to the credibility of this conference.&#8221;<br>Reza Najafi, who serves as Tehran&#8217;s ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency, rejected the U.S. \u200bstatement as &#8220;baseless and politically motivated.&#8221; &#8220;It is indefensible that United States, as the only state ever to have \u200bused nuclear weapons, and the one that continues to expand and modernize its nuclear arsenal\u2026 seeks to position itself as \u200can arbitrator \u2060of the compliance,&#8221; he told the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nuclear issue has been at the heart of the two-month war between Iran and the United States and Israel, with U.S. President Donald Trump reiterating on Sunday that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon.<br>Iran has long demanded Washington acknowledge its right to enrich uranium, which Tehran says it only \u200bseeks for peaceful purposes, \u200bbut which Western powers \u2060say could be used to make nuclear weapons.<br>Iran has insisted it does not seek nuclear weapons.
