{"id":15429,"date":"2026-03-24T14:55:52","date_gmt":"2026-03-24T06:55:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/?p=15429"},"modified":"2026-03-24T14:55:58","modified_gmt":"2026-03-24T06:55:58","slug":"preservation-groups-sue-to-block-trump-kennedy-center-changes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/?p=15429","title":{"rendered":"Preservation groups sue to block Trump Kennedy Center changes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"563\" height=\"342\" src=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1-22.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1-22.jpg 563w, https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1-22-300x182.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 563px) 100vw, 563px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A coalition of historic preservation and architectural groups sued President Trump and the Kennedy Center\u2019s board of trustees on Monday, seeking to block the planned renovations of the performing arts center set to start in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Washington, D.C., argues that the project would cause \u201cirreparable harm\u201d to the Kennedy Center and \u201cthe public\u2019s right to meaningfully informed and heard before irrevocable actions are taken.\u201d Trump, in his role as chairman of the board, and the board itself were among the listed defendants, along with Interior Secretary Doug Burgum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDemolition, new construction, major reconstruction, major renovation, or major aesthetic transformation of the Kennedy Center would permanently destroy historic fabric, degrade the monumental core\u2019s vistas and public grounds, and compromise the Kennedy Center\u2019s memorial purpose and architectural integrity, causing permanent, irreversible harm that no subsequent remedy can fully undo,\u201d the 82-page complaint argues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump\u2019s hand-picked board of the venue, which he oversees as chair, voted last week to go forward with the two-year closure and renovation plan. The center will close after a July 4 celebration, with a Grand Re-Opening\u201d to follow once the project is complete, according to a release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Congress earmarked $257 million in the One Big Beautiful Bill to \u201caddress decades of deferred maintenance,\u201d at the venue, the release added. While the lawsuit said that regular repairs and maintenance are needed, the project \u201cwould go well beyond\u201d that and \u201cinstead contemplated the erection of a fundamentally new structure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hill has reached out to the White House and Kennedy Center for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since returning to the Oval Office last January, Trump has exerted significant influence over the Kennedy Center by appointing new board members and himself as chairman. The new board voted in December to add the president\u2019s name to the center, a move that congressional Democrats said could not occur without legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio), an ex officio member of the center\u2019s board, also filed a lawsuit earlier this month seeking to block the impending closure. The Ohio Democrat, who was present at the meeting to approve the plans, told reporters last week that the proceedings moved quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a weak yes, it was not an overwhelming [yes], but it would be too hard, in all honesty, to discern if someone really opened their mouth or said something, and as soon as [Trump] said, \u2018All those in favor,\u2019 unanimously followed in nanoseconds,\u201d she said of the vote. \u201cNo one said no.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A coalition of historic preservation and architectural groups sued President Trump and the Kennedy Center\u2019s board of trustees on Monday, seeking to block the planned renovations of the performing arts center set to start in July.
