Thursday\u2019s vote made those guidelines official.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Texas State Rep. Brian Harrison, R-Midlothian, started a social media campaign aimed at ID changes that would prevent people who entered the country illegally from registering and renewing vehicles in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Harrison previously told KXAN in a statement that he was \u201cproud to have single-handedly forced this change to stop illegals from registering vehicles.\u201d In a social media post Thursday, Harrison said it was \u201cinsane this was happening for so many years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some counties already began enforcing the new requirement, but a few weeks ago, KXAN reported that Travis County Tax Assessor Celia Israel said her office was not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wholeheartedly disagree with this rule and will not enforce this rule until it is properly authorized,\u201d Israel said during a January hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Israel also said that beyond the effects on the industry, she was worried the rules would mean more fraud and uninsured drivers on the roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RELATED | Travis County Tax Assessor refuses ID changes on car registration aimed at illegal immigration<br>Prior to the vote, Israel said the current state law did not demand that vehicle owners be legal residents, just residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">KXAN reached out to Israel\u2019s office to ask if Thursday\u2019s vote would mean her office would start enforcing the rule.
