Six House Republicans joined Democrats on Wednesday to pass a resolution to repeal President Trump\u2019s tariffs on Canada, a blow to both President Trump and House GOP leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Wednesday 219-211 vote also followed an intraparty revolt against leadership over the administration\u2019s handling of trade policy a day earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reps. Don Bacon (R-Neb.), Kevin Kiley (R-Calif.), Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), Jeff Hurd (R-Colo.), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) and Dan Newhouse (R-Wash.) joined almost all Democrats in supporting the resolution sponsored by Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.), the ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resolution would terminate Trump\u2019s use of a national emergency to impose punitive measures on Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rep. Jared Golden (Maine) was the only Democrat to vote \u201cno.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have a trade agreement, and I think they\u2019ve been a good ally, and I think they\u2019ve been unfairly attacked by the administration, and so I\u2019m going to oppose it \u2013 I\u2019m going to oppose the tariffs,\u201d Bacon told The Hill before the vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) has argued on X that \u201ctaxing authority is vested in the House of Representatives, not the Executive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bacon, Massie and Kiley all voted with Democrats to block a procedural rule on Tuesday evening, due to language in it that would have barred a member\u2019s ability to call snap votes to repeal Trump\u2019s tariffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The failed rule vote on Tuesday paved the way for a slew of snap repeal votes to be called up \u2014 starting with Wednesday\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meeks\u2019 resolution now heads to the Senate, where it appears likely to pass. In October, four Republicans joined all Democrats in a vote to terminate Trump\u2019s tariffs on Canada, a measure led by Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.). Those GOP lawmakers were Sens. Mitch McConnell (Ky.), Rand Paul (Ky.), Susan Collins (Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While it\u2019s presumed Trump will veto Meeks\u2019 measure, Democrats are likely to capitalize on the president having to confront major pushback on his strategy of using tariffs to impose American demands on other countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an apparent nod to that, Trump took to Truth Social as the vote was wrapping up Wednesday to issue a primary threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAny Republican, in the House or the Senate, that votes against TARIFFS will seriously suffer the consequences come Election time, and that includes Primaries!\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added, \u201cTARIFFS have given us Economic and National Security, and no Republican should be responsible for destroying this privilege.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meeks after the vote praised the six Republicans who broke with their party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey sincerely, I think, voted for it because it was important for their constituency, and they were standing up to, you know, Donald King \u2013 Donald Trump, who thinks he\u2019s king,\u201d Meeks said. \u201cTo say, \u2018I\u2019m going to do what\u2019s best for my constituents first.\u2019 And so I thank them for the courage and what they did, and I hope that they will be with us as we look at other tariff bills that was put forward by the President, as we then continue to try to have a vote to discuss those issues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also blasted Trump\u2019s tariffs on Canada, calling the country \u201cone of our strongest allies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCanadians gave their life for us and various people and all the President has done from the time that he became president, was insult calling them (the) 51st state, put these 35% tariffs, not allowing the bridge to open up between the United States and Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meeks also has resolutions to terminate the national emergencies justifying Trump\u2019s tariffs on other countries, such as Mexico, and the broad \u201cLiberation Day\u201d tariffs across the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meeks had previously said in a statement that Trump\u2019s tariffs are \u201cdriving up prices, killing jobs, and threatening our economy. This isn\u2019t what Americans voted for.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
