Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Sunday said a potential United States acquisition of Greenland would be \u201coverwhelmingly in America\u2019s national best interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen it comes to Greenland, I want to commend President Trump, for being single-mindedly focused on America First, on U.S. economic interests, and U.S. national security interests,\u201d Cruz said during an appearance on Fox News\u2019s \u201cSunday Morning Futures With Maria Bartiromo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI believe it is overwhelmingly in America\u2019s national interest to acquire Greenland,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of the second Trump administration, White House officials have proposed the acquisition of Greenland through the use of military force or purchase for \u201cnational security purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president has led the charge to take over the self-autonomous island rich with natural resources, as Danish officials reject the possibility of selling the territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLook, the whole history of America has been a history of acquiring new lands and new territories, whether you go back to Thomas Jefferson making the Louisiana purchase \u2014 about half of the United States of America today \u2014 or you go back to America purchasing Alaska from Russia. You want to talk about \u2014 at the time they called it \u2018Seward\u2019s Folly\u2019 \u2014 It turned out to, to be an extraordinarily consequential purchase,\u201d Cruz said on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGreenland has massive rare earth minerals and critical minerals. There are enormous economic benefits to America, but like Alaska, it is located on the Arctic which is a major theater for major military conflict with either Russia or China,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His comments fall in line with Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.), who compared the White House\u2019s efforts to buy Greenland to the Louisiana purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, GOP Rep. Michael McCaul (Texas) said it would pose no additional benefit to the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf we want to put more military in there, we can. We don\u2019t have to invade it. If he wants to buy it, that\u2019s fine. But I don\u2019t see a willing seller right now,\u201d McCaul said during a Sunday appearance on ABC\u2019s \u201cThis Week.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
