{"id":14331,"date":"2025-12-25T11:07:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-25T03:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/?p=14331"},"modified":"2025-12-25T11:11:49","modified_gmt":"2025-12-25T03:11:49","slug":"trump-backed-asfura-wins-honduras-presidency-after-disputed-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/?p=14331","title":{"rendered":"Trump-backed Asfura wins Honduras presidency after disputed election"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nasry Asfura, the conservative National Party candidate backed by U.S. President Donald Trump, has won Honduras\u2019 presidential election, the electoral body said on Wednesday as it finally declared a victor of the November \u200d30 presidential election after weeks of delays, technical problems, and allegations of fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"414\" src=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/\u4f01\u4e1a\u5fae\u4fe1\u622a\u56fe_20251225110526.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/\u4f01\u4e1a\u5fae\u4fe1\u622a\u56fe_20251225110526.png 624w, https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/\u4f01\u4e1a\u5fae\u4fe1\u622a\u56fe_20251225110526-300x199.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The electoral authority, known as the CNE, said Asfura had won 40.3% of the vote, edging out center-right Liberal Party candidate Salvador Nasralla who garnered 39.5%. The candidate of the ruling LIBRE party, Rixi Moncada, came a distant third.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Results were so tight and the ballot processing system so chaotic that \u200caround 15% of the tally sheets comprising hundreds of thousands \u200cof ballots had to be counted by hand to determine the winner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The results were approved by two electoral council members and one deputy, as disputes continued over the razor-thin vote. The third council member, Marlon Ochoa, was not present in the video declaring the winner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHonduras: \u200bI am ready to govern. I will not let you down,\u201d Asfura said in a post on X following the confirmation of the results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The head of the Honduran \u200dCongress rejected the CNE\u2019s declaration, however, describing it \u200bas an \u201celectoral coup\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is completely outside the law. It has no \u200bvalue,\u201d Congress president Luis Redondo, of the ruling LIBRE party, wrote on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump threw his \u200dsupport behind Asfura, a 67-year-old politician and businessman who is the former mayor of the capital Tegucigalpa, writing in a Truth Social post before the election that he was the \u201conly real friend of Freedom in Honduras\u201d and urging people to vote for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump also threatened to cut off U.S. financial support to Honduras if Asfura \u200ddid not win and pardoned former President Juan Orlando Hernandez, also of Asfura\u2019s National Party, who had been serving a 45-year sentence in the U.S. on drug trafficking and weapons \u200dcharges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amid delays in the \u200dcount, Trump weighed into the election again alleging fraud without providing \u200bevidence and saying there would be \u201chell to pay\u201d if Honduras \u200bchanged \u2060preliminary results that had put Asfura ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump\u2019s backing of Asfura, \u200cexperts say, is part of his push to mold a conservative bloc across Latin America, stretching from Nayib Bukele in El Salvador to Javier Milei in Argentina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Nasralla and the ruling LIBRE party have decried Trump\u2019s comments as election meddling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nasralla told Reuters that the last-minute interference from Trump had damaged his chances of winning.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nasry Asfura, the conservative National Party candidate backed by U.S. President Donald Trump, has won Honduras\u2019 presidential election, the electoral body said on Wednesday as it finally declared a victor of the November \u200d30 presidential election after weeks of delays, technical problems, and allegations of fraud.
