New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) said Monday that she thought a \u201ctax the rich\u201d chant at a Sunday rally for New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani was \u201cLet\u2019s go Bills\u201d instead, referencing the NFL team the Buffalo Bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGiven the reception you received last night at Zohran\u2019s rally, where people were chanting, \u2018tax the rich, tax the rich,\u2019 are you going to hold the line on raising taxes, even if it means losing an endorsement or getting a primary challenge?\u201d a reporter asked Hochul in a clip posted to the social platform X Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t hear what they were chanting. I thought they were saying, \u2018Let\u2019s go Bills,\u2019\u201d Hochul responded. \u201cI wasn\u2019t \u2014 I wasn\u2019t sure \u2014 when you\u2019re up there \u2014 I heard some noise. I heard a lot of cheers. But later on, it became clear to me that there is a \u2014 I know there\u2019s a passion for that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI went in there as the leader of the Democratic Party, whose job it is to unify and unify behind the Democratic nominee. I love the energy out there,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Hochul began speaking at Mamdani\u2019s rally on Sunday, chants of \u201ctax the rich\u201d could be audibly heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hochul formally endorsed Mamdani in September, announcing the endorsement in a New York Times op-ed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe question of who will be the next mayor is one I take extremely seriously and to which I have devoted a great deal of thought,\u201d Hochul said in her Times piece. \u201cTonight I am endorsing Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
