California gubernatorial candidate and former Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) tried to end an interview with a reporter after she was asked what she would say to voters in the state who voted for President Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat do you say to the 40 percent of California voters, who you\u2019ll need in order to win, who voted for Trump?\u201d CBS News correspondent Julie Watts asked Porter in a sit-down interview that aired Tuesday and quickly went viral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow would I need them in order to win, ma\u2019am?\u201d Porter responded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked whether she thinks she will win the other 60 percent of California voters, Porter responds \u201cIn a general election? Yes. If it is me versus a Republican, I think I will win the people who did not vote for Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Watts then asks Porter what she thinks would happen if it was her versus another Democrat, to which Porter said, \u201cI don\u2019t intend that to be the case.\u201d Porter argued she has already built support in terms of name recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Porter then appeared to become irritated when Watts pressed her, saying the interview was becoming \u201cunnecessarily argumentative.\u201d Watts said CBS News has asked the other reporters in the race the same question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to keep doing this. I\u2019m gonna call it. Thank you,\u201d Porter says, looking off camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not going to do the interview with us?\u201d Watts asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNope, not like this I\u2019m not. Not with seven follow-ups to every question you ask,\u201d she said, adding that she didn\u2019t care that the other candidates had been asked the same question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Watts and Porter continued to go back and forth on whether Porter would answer the reporter\u2019s questions and follow-ups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to have an unhappy experience with you, and I don\u2019t want this all on camera,\u201d Porter said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The testy exchange comes as Porter leads the race for governor in the Golden State. According to a poll from the University of California, Berkeley released in late August, Porter led the crowded field of Democrats with 17 percent support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Republican Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco came in with 10 percent support, while Democratic former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra received 9 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nine other candidates earned 6 percent or less. In California\u2019s nonpartisan system, the top two candidates move on from the primary to the general election, regardless of party affiliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, 38 percent of voters remain undecided in the race, more than twice the share that picked Porter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two of Porter\u2019s Democratic rivals criticized her handling of the interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Becerra in a post on the social platform X said he was \u201cnot interested in excluding any vote.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery Californian deserves affordable health care, safe streets, a roof over their head and a living wage,\u201d he wrote in a post noting the interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said \u201cwe need a leader who will solve hard problems and answer simple questions\u201d in a post that highlighted Porter cutting off the interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates California\u2019s governor\u2019s race as \u201csolid Democratic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
