Rising power prices are becoming a political liability for Republicans as electricity costs outpace inflation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A recent Consumer Price Index report found electricity prices were rising at double the rate of inflation, having increased 5.5 percent over the past year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn the last couple of years, different items that have gone up in price have become media concerns. They become very visible, people get very angry \u2014 and I think electric rates are heading in that direction,\u201d said Mark Wolfe, executive director of the National Energy Assistance Directors\u2019 Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wolfe said that if rates continue to rise, \u201cit\u2019ll become a political issue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Trump administration is already seeing it as one \u2014 and trying to put the blame on Democrats and renewable energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat is a key challenge for us,\u201d Energy Secretary Chris Wright told Fox Business Network\u2019s \u201cMornings with Maria\u201d when asked about utility bills last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThings move slowly in the electricity grid. All sorts of crazy projects were under construction and being built on your electricity grids over the last four years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wright, in a recent interview with Politico, similarly blamed \u201cthe momentum of the Obama-Biden policies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, he lamented, \u201cWe\u2019re going to get blamed, because we\u2019re in office.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Trump has taken a similar tack, decrying \u201cridiculous, corrupt politician approved \u2018\u2019windmills.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile,  Democrats are beginning to weaponize the issue against Republicans, especially after they repealed subsidies for wind and solar energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experts say a buildout of renewables would help bring down prices, but the impacts of Trump\u2019s moves are not being felt yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cResidential retail electricity prices are set with basically a lag,\u201d Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Christopher Knittel recently told. \u201cTrump\u2019s effects on the rate changes won\u2019t take place until after the midterms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But some also note some of this administration\u2019s policies, including those that attack renewable energy, are expected to exacerbate the issue in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s less power capacity being built, and then that means that there\u2019s gonna be less supply of power and the same demand, so prices will be higher,\u201d Thomas Rowlands-Rees, head of North America Research at BloombergNEF, said when asked about the repeal of renewable energy tax credits.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
