California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has figured out the best way to get under President Trump\u2019s skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Act like him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an effort to egg Trump on \u2014 and rally his own troops in the Democratic Party \u2014 Newsom has taken a page from Trump\u2019s playbook, mirroring everything from the president\u2019s rants to his social media habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recent days, the California governor has touted his own \u201cbeautiful\u201d midterm redistricting proposal and his \u201cbeautiful\u201d rally to boot \u2014 needling Trump\u2019s braggadocious ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newsom has started to write his social media posts in ALL CAPS, just like the president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And he\u2019s come up with his own Trump-y nickname for the president: TACO, short for Trump Always Chickens Out, an acronym that originated on Wall Street in reaction to Trump\u2019s moves on tariffs and is designed to annoy the White House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the process, Newsom is garnering attention from all ends of the media, while energizing Democrats eager to see members of their party fight back at the president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The HuffPost on Tuesday led with the headline \u201cHe\u2019s on a troll\u201d with a photo of a smiling Newsom. Fox News during a segment on \u201cThe Five\u201d commented on his efforts to copy Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDemocrats are over being the \u2018nice guy\u2019 party,\u201d said Democratic strategist Jamal Simmons, who served as Kamala Harris\u2019s communications director in the vice president\u2019s office. \u201cStanding up for Dem values doesn\u2019t mean you have to play by the old rules, and Newsom in particular is showing he\u2019ll go as low as he needs to to take on Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since losing the election in November, Democrats have been rudderless and, for the most part, leaderless, desperately trying to find their way out of the wilderness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Wall Street Journal poll out late last month showed Democrats\u2019 popularity at the lowest point in three decades. The poll showed 63 percent of voters have an unfavorable view of Democratic Party while 33 percent of voters have a favorable view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Newsom\u2019s recent strategy has given the party a shot in the arm, Simmons and other strategists say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGavin Newsom is capturing the hearts and minds of Democrats,\u201d Simmons said, adding that, \u201cPeople who don\u2019t do politics for a living are asking about him, and they really like him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anthony Coley, a Democratic strategist who served in the Biden administration, agreed, saying \u201cwatching him go toe-to-toe with Trump on social media \u2014 an arena Trump has dominated for a decade \u2014 is refreshing, energizing and even fun to watch for many Democrats.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A survey out this week by Echelon Insights showed Newsom surging in a 2028 poll among likely candidates. The poll taken Aug. 14-18 \u2014 a period when Newsom dominated headlines \u2014 shows the California governor in second place at 13 percent, behind Harris who received 26 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recent days, Newsom\u2019s press office \u2014 clearly aware of the traction the governor has been getting with his new Trumpian tack \u2014 has continued to needle Trump by continuing to echo him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the account isn\u2019t just targeting Trump. It\u2019s also going after Vice President Vance. On Monday, the account edited a photo of the vice president onto the body of Australian breakdancer Rachael \u201cRaygun\u201d Gunn, who made headlines last year for a mediocre performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The account also targeted other Republicans, including Dana Perino \u2014 the former White House press secretary who is now a television host \u2014 after she slammed him for being unserious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou have to stop it with the Twitter thing,\u201d Perino said Monday. \u201cIf I were his wife, I would say: You are making a fool of yourself, stop it. \u2026 He\u2019s got a big job as governor of California, but if he wants an even bigger job, he has to be a little more serious.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Support for Newsom\u2019s social media efforts appeared to be growing. As of Tuesday afternoon, the X account for Newsom\u2019s press office had nearly 400,000 followers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Kevin Madden, the longtime Republican strategist, said Democrats are making a mistake to focus on \u201ccommunications tactics\u201d when they should be focused on messaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNewsom\u2019s strategy and approach has been reflective of that,\u201d Madden said. \u201cHe\u2019s got a new podcast and a more aggressive social media presence, but other than more clicks and downloads has that shifted the dynamics or public debate in his favor, or improved the national party brand?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo far, there is little evidence of that,\u201d Madden added. \u201cIt has, though, positioned him at the top of the party\u2019s internal process of sorting out the next generation of national candidates and leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Democratic strategist Christy Setzer said Newsom\u2019s \u201ctrolling\u201d has two main audiences: \u201cDemocrats who want someone, anyone, to take on Trump in a real way, and the media, who Democrats feel have normalized too much of Trump\u2019s insanity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m surprised it\u2019s taken Democrats this long to do it,\u201d Setzer said, calling the strategy \u201cpretty brilliant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe\u2019s hoping to get under Trump\u2019s skin, and may have drawn blood on that account, [and] is it just me or did Trump stop using the all-caps in his unhinged posts after seeing Newsom\u2019s?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Setzer added that while \u201cno one will be Trumpier than Trump,\u201d the strategy is working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
