Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), a close ally of President Trump, on Tuesday joined calls for a special counsel to investigate the handling of files in the case involving former financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe deserve the truth about the Epstein Files. I\u2019m ready for a Special Counsel to handle this,\u201d Boebert wrote in a post on the social platform X on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She suggested the investigation be led by former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), who withdrew from consideration as Trump\u2019s nominee for attorney general in November amid controversy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c@MattGaetz, how about it?\u201d Boebert added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her statement follows an interview she did with conservative influencer and commentator Benny Johnson earlier Tuesday, when she expanded on her call for a special counsel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOf course we want answers,\u201d Boebert said in the interview. \u201cNo one is satisfied with what has been received, or lack thereof. No one is satisfied with the rollout of this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think moving forward, we need a special counsel,\u201d she added. \u201cThat has got to happen. There has to be a special investigation into this if we aren\u2019t going to be provided information.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Justice Department and FBI issued a joint memo last week that said Epstein did not have a client list and confirmed he died by suicide \u2014 not due to foul play as many suspected \u2014 in his New York City jail cell in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The findings incensed members of the MAGA movement, who have for years pushed conspiracy theories about Epstein\u2019s death and claims that prominent Democrats would be named on a client list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even staunch Trump supporters, like far-right activist Laura Loomer, have been critical of the handling of the files and called for a special counsel to investigate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attorney General Pam Bondi, in particular, has faced significant backlash, given her comments earlier this year in which she pledged transparency regarding the Epstein files. The attorney general last week defended the Justice Department\u2019s handling of the evidence, and Trump has fiercely defended Bondi against criticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boebert praised the Trump administration for many of its initiatives and said it\u2019s important the Epstein files don\u2019t completely distract from those victories. Still, she said it\u2019s essential that there be a resolution to the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNow, there\u2019s a lot of things that Attorney General Pam Bondi is doing well. Of course, President Trump is doing many things well. The FBI is doing a great job. Our Department of Homeland Security, is, you know, this mass deportation machine on steroids, and now they have the funding to go after it even more,\u201d Boebert said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut this is something \u2014 I hope it doesn\u2019t become a false idol to Republicans, where we just lose sight of everything else,\u201d she continued. \u201cBut that doesn\u2019t mean we don\u2019t want answers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is certainly important, and I want answers, and maybe that takes that special counsel to do so. Maybe Matt Gaetz can lead the special counsel,\u201d she added in the interview.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
