U.S. stock futures fell on Sunday as Trump continued his letter-writing blitz, warning the EU and Mexico over the weekend that they face 30% tariffs unless they reach trade deals by Aug. 1.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>U.S. markets pointed lower on Sunday night as the Trump administration showed no signs of backing off on tariffs or Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After Wall Street&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/12\/trump-tariffs-taco-trade-backfiring-stock-market-record-highs-trade-war\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previously downplayed risks<\/a>&nbsp;from President Donald Trump\u2019s trade war, investors are starting to take his tariff threats more seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump continued his letter-writing blitz, warning the EU and Mexico on Saturday that they face 30% tariffs unless they reach trade deals by Aug. 1. The EU said Sunday it will&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/13\/eu-retaliatory-tariffs-us-goods-trump-trade-war-talks\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">delay its retaliatory tariffs<\/a>&nbsp;that were due to take effect on Monday to give negotiations with the U.S. more breathing room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump officials have also claimed Powell has mismanaged the Fed and point to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/13\/trump-vs-powell-monetary-policy-fed-rate-cuts-office-renovations\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">renovations of the central bank\u2019s headquarters<\/a>, with National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett even indicating that Powell\u2019s job could be at stake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/week-transcript-7-13-25-white-house-nec\/story?id=123708097\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asked by ABC News<\/a>&nbsp;if the renovation could be used as a reason to fire Powell, Hassett said, \u201cI think that whether the president decides to push down that road or not is going to depend a lot on the answers that we get to the questions that Russ Vought sent to the Fed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that whether Trump has the authority to remove Powell is being explored, \u201cBut certainly, if there\u2019s cause, he does.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/deutsche-bank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deutsche Bank<\/a>&nbsp;said financial markets are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/12\/jerome-powell-ouster-underpriced-trump-feud-fed-rate-cuts\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">underpricing the risk<\/a>&nbsp;that he could be ousted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Futures tied to the&nbsp;Dow&nbsp;Jones Industrial Average dropped 214 points, or 0.48%. S&amp;P 500 futures were down 0.50%, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/nasdaq\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nasdaq<\/a>&nbsp;futures fell 0.55%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The yield on the 10-year Treasury edged down 0.6 basis point to 4.417%. Gold was flat at $3,364 per ounce, while the U.S. dollar was up 0.2% against the euro and down 0.12% against the yen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>U.S. oil prices rose 0.58% to $68.85 per barrel, and Brent crude climbed 0.16% to $70.79.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key economic indicators are due in the coming week. The consumer price index will come out on Tuesday and the producer price index is due on Wednesday, offering fresh clues as to how much tariffs are impacting inflation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That comes as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/13\/who-pays-tariffs-inflation-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tariffs have yet to trigger a spike in prices<\/a>, though many companies are still drawing down inventories that were stockpiled prior to the duties going into effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also on Wednesday, the Federal Reserve\u2019s beige book survey of business and economic conditions will be issued, while retail sales will be available on Thursday, and housing starts come out on Friday. Those datasets will also provide insights into how consumers and companies are responding to tariffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several Fed policymakers will speak this coming week amid intense pressure from the White House to lower interest rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earnings seasons get going in earnest over the coming week, with Wall Street eager to find out how much of the tariff are impacting margins. The top U.S. banks will report second-quarter results, starting with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/jpmorgan-chase\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">JPMorgan Chase<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/citigroup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Citigroup<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/wells-fargo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wells Fargo<\/a>&nbsp;on Tuesday. In the tech sector, streaming leader&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/netflix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Netflix<\/a>&nbsp;and chip giant TSMC report on Thursday. Among industrials, results from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/alcoa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alcoa<\/a>, GE Aerospace and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/3m\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3M<\/a>&nbsp;are also due.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Thursday,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/delta-air-lines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Delta Air Lines<\/a>&nbsp;beat earnings and revenue forecasts while also reinstating its 2025 profit outlook because demand had stabilized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. markets pointed lower on Sunday night as the Trump administration showed no signs of backing off on tariffs or Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell.
