{"id":11207,"date":"2025-05-27T15:51:55","date_gmt":"2025-05-27T07:51:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/?p=11207"},"modified":"2025-05-27T15:51:59","modified_gmt":"2025-05-27T07:51:59","slug":"epa-boss-wants-to-kill-start-stop-function-in-automobiles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/?p=11207","title":{"rendered":"EPA boss wants to kill start-stop function in automobiles"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NewsNation<\/a>) \u2014&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/science\/ap-what-the-epas-partial-rollback-of-the-forever-chemical-drinking-water-rule-means\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">EPA<\/a>&nbsp;administrator has promised to end a contentious feature in many automobiles: the automatic start-stop feature that temporarily shuts down engines at red light stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee Zeldin says the start-stop function, which automakers began installing to reduce emissions in return for federal incentives, annoys most motorists, who consider it \u201cthe single worst feature in their motor vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey want it eliminated,\u201d Zeldin told Blake Burman on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/the-hill\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Hill\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To that end, he said the EPA will seek to revoke its approval of credits that were granted in exchange for the technology\u2019s installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Obama administration originally incentivized start-stop more than a decade ago to improve fuel efficiency. By 2022, an estimated 65% of vehicles in the United States had the feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zeldin suggested the function wouldn\u2019t be so annoying if owners had the option of disabling it wholesale rather than having to do so during each individual trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf it saves a little bit in gas, what is it doing to my starter? What is it doing to my engine? Is it safe?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The former Republican congressman from New York talked exclusively with NewsNation Thursday after appearing before lawmakers this week to discuss&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/politics\/ap-politics\/ap-epa-chief-zeldin-faces-bipartisan-anger-in-senate-over-funding-freeze-grant-cancellations\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">budget and grant cuts his agency is seeking to make.<\/a>&nbsp;The EPA\u2019s fiscal 2026 budget would be cut by more than half as part of the Trump administration\u2019s efforts to downsize government.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
