Veteran Democratic Party strategist James Carville suggested he would support Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) if the progressive lawmaker becomes the party\u2019s presidential nominee in 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carville first criticized the Democratic Party during his Tuesday appearance on MSNBC\u2019s \u201cThe Beat,\u201d saying it does not \u201chave a message\u201d and that the party\u2019s leader will be the next presidential nominee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut boy, we got some talent out there. And I don\u2019t have a very favorable opinion of the Democratic Party, and I have no idea who the leader party is, and I am not even disturbed, because Democrats are going to pick their own leader,\u201d Carville said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not going to be picked by the press, it\u2019s not going to be picked by polling. It\u2019s going to be it\u2019s going to be picked by Democratic voters, and that\u2019ll have to come in due time,\u201d he told host Ari Melber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The veteran political operative argued the Democratic Party, which suffered losses in the 2024 election, including losing the White House and the Senate, is not in as \u201cnearly as bad shape as it\u2019s being portrayed\u201d and showed openness to backing Ocasio-Cortez if she secures the party\u2019s nomination in 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLook, we lost an election. I don\u2019t like the party. I don\u2019t blame the party reputation for being low, but I think if AOC wants to run for president and she gets the [nomination], then God bless you. You are the leader of the Democratic Party. I mean, whoever gets that nomination is gonna be it,\u201d Carville said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Melber appeared surprised by the strategist\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou heard it here first. James Carville \u2013 once a critic of the AOC podcast landscape \u2013 now says if you win, you win, and you\u2019ve got his support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carville has previously been critical of progressives within the party, including Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who have said that the party needs radical change to be able to beat Republicans in the next election cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBernie has run for president twice, he\u2019s lost twice, AOC and her kind \u2026 they want to run against other Democrats,\u201d Carville said in mid-April. \u201cThey don\u2019t want to run against Republicans. When you beat a Republican, come back and see me and I\u2019ll be impressed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
