President Trump on Wednesday met with new Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa during his swing through Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, a signal of thawing relations between the two countries following the fall of former President Bashar a-Assad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting lasted just over a half an hour, ahead of a Gulf Cooperation Council Summit. Trump was joined in-person by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan, who joined by phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are currently exploring normalizing with Syria\u2019s new government,\u201d Trump said after the meeting, according to reporters traveling with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve seen such progress,\u201d he added. \u201cThe whole world is watching the Middle East.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump on the call encouraged al-Sharaa \u201cto do a great job for the Syrian people\u201d and to sign the Abraham Accords with Israel, a reference to Trump\u2019s policy related to normalizing relations between Middle Eastern countries and Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also said his message included rejecting Syrian and Palestinian terrorists from the countries and to prevent the resurgence of ISIS, according to press secretary Karoline Leavitt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president announced on Tuesday that he would be rolling back sanctions on Syria after the crown prince and Erdo\u011fan urged him to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Al-Sharaa thanked Trump, the crown prince and Erdo\u011fan for their efforts to put together the meeting and recognized \u201cshared U.S.-Syrian interests in countering terrorism and eliminating chemical weapons,\u201d according to Leavitt. Additionally, he affirmed his commitment to the 1974 disengagement with Israel and said he hoped Syria could be a link to facilitating trade between east and west.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also encouraged U.S. companies to invest in Syrian oil and gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI felt very strongly that this would give them a chance,\u201d Trump told reporters on Tuesday about lifting sanctions. \u201cGives them a good, strong chance\u2026it was my honor to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also on the call, Erdo\u011fan and the crown prince commended Trump for lifting sanctions on Syria, according to Leavitt. Trump then thanked the two leaders for their friendship and told al-Sharaa that there is an opportunity to \u201cto do something historic in his country.\u201d The Russian-Ukraine war and war in Gaza was also discussed, Leavitt said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sanctions had been imposed against the formerregime amid a brutal civil war.
