{"id":10381,"date":"2025-03-26T16:36:56","date_gmt":"2025-03-26T08:36:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/?p=10381"},"modified":"2025-03-27T10:00:39","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T02:00:39","slug":"vance-to-accompany-wife-to-greenland-amid-backlash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/?p=10381","title":{"rendered":"Vance to accompany wife to Greenland amid backlash"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"317\" height=\"179\" src=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/\u5fae\u4fe1\u622a\u56fe_20250326163401.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/\u5fae\u4fe1\u622a\u56fe_20250326163401.jpg 317w, https:\/\/tingchao.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/\u5fae\u4fe1\u622a\u56fe_20250326163401-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 317px) 100vw, 317px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Vice President Vance said he\u2019s traveling to Greenland on Friday, a move that comes after the Trump administration provoked backlash from officials in Greenland and Denmark when it was announced that second lady Usha Vance would be heading there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere was so much excitement around Usha\u2019s visit to Greenland this Friday, that I decided that I didn\u2019t want her to have all that fun by herself, and so I\u2019m going to join her,\u201d Vance said in a video released Tuesday afternoon on the social platform X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vance\u2019s announcement adds another layer of tension to an already fraught atmosphere surrounding his wife\u2019s planned visit, which officials in Denmark and Greenland reject as a provocation part of President Trump\u2019s repeated claims of his intent to take over the arctic island for what he says are \u201cinternational security concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plans for national security adviser Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright to also travel to Denmark are further inflaming tensions between Washington and Copenhagen and Nuuk, Greenland\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officials in Denmark and Greenland have denounced the visits. Greenland Prime Minister M\u00fate Bourup Egede called Waltz\u2019s visit in particular \u201chighly aggressive.\u201d Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the U.S. delegation an \u201cunacceptable pressure\u201d and vowed resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jens-Frederik Nielsen, leader of Greenalnd\u2019s Demokraatit party and poised to be the country\u2019s next prime minister following elections earlier this month, said the visit showed a \u201clack of respect for the Greenlandic people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trip comes as Vance and Waltz are embroiled in a major scandal surrounding the Trump administration\u2019s handling of classified intelligence. The vice president and national security adviser were part of a group chat on the messaging app Signal discussing attack plans against targets in Yemen, and that chat inadvertently included The Atlantic Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vance said he is expected to travel to the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, where the U.S. Space Force\u2019s 821st Space Base Group is located, to visit Space Force members, known as Guardians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vance said the point of his visit is to \u201ccheck out what\u2019s going on with the security there of Greenland,\u201d saying the largely ice-covered island of 57,000 people is a primary target for adversaries looking to threaten the U.S. and Canada. He accused Denmark of failing to take Greenland\u2019s security seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to reinvigorate the security of the people of Greenland because we think it\u2019s important to protecting the security of the entire world,\u201d Vance said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, leaders in both America and in Denmark, I think, ignored Greenland for far too long. That\u2019s been bad for Greenland \u2014 it\u2019s also been bad for the security of the entire world. We think we can take things in a different direction, so I\u2019m going to check it out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Greenland is a semiautonomous country, with Denmark responsible for the island\u2019s foreign policy and defense. Independence movements on the island are growing in strength, but there is a dispute on how quickly to separate from Denmark. The Demokraatit party, which won parliamentary elections earlier this month, is working to form a government, and its platform promises a slow break from Copenhagen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Trump has made acquiring Greenland a major feature of his foreign policy goals in his second term. He first proposed taking over the island during his first term but has increasingly hardened his designs, saying in a March 4 address to Congress that \u201cwe\u2019re going to get it [Greenland].
